Doretha Elaine Adams Rector was born to Herman Sr. and Georgia Adams on December 13, 1934 in Dobbin, Texas. Doretha was raised in Edinburg, Texas and later moved to Houston, Texas in 1950. She attended Jack Yates High School and graduated from Texas Southern University, where she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She also did studies from several extension schools of Texas A & M, The University of Houston, y La Universidad de Puebla, Mexico.
Doretha was a teacher for 45 years, teaching Spanish, World History, American Government and Music Appreciation. She taught 11 years in Galveston, Texas, 31 years in Conroe, Texas, and 3 years in Houston, Texas. She is the recipient of numerous awards ranging from “Teacher of the Year” (several times) and the “Second Mile Award” for great teaching. Doretha had a passion for ensuring that all of her students were learning at their full capacity and that they knew the sky was the limit when it came to their success in life.
Doretha accepted Christ at an early age and attended Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church 1950-1971 under the leadership of Rev. W. H. Banks. She and her family later joined Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in 1971 under the leadership of Rev. B. J. Lewis, Rev Michael Jones and currently Rev. Raymond Hillis. She remained a faithful member at Progressive MBC until her health failed her.
While at Progressive, Doretha was a part of many organizations: Sunday School Teacher, BTU, Teachers Meeting, Mission, Mission Choir Pianist, Deaconess, Vacation Bible School Directress, Uplift Committee, and Scholarship Committee. She also faithfully attended the Independent Missionary Baptist General Association of Texas, which hosted the Sunday School Congress and BTU Congress.
It was at Jordan Grove MBC, where she met the love of her life, Wilmer Rector. Doretha and Wilmer married December 30, 1956. The lovely couple resided in the Acres Home Community and to this union two children were born, Renrick and Rengelic.
The Lord called Doretha to eternal rest on March 22, 2021. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Herman Adams Sr. and Georgia Adams; her husband, Wilmer Rector; sister, Maggie Ball and half-sister Amelia Adams. Left to cherish her lovely memories are her son, Renrick Rector (Dedie); her daughter, Rengelic Rector-Jones; her grandchildren: Ken Jones Jr. and Georgia Rector; sisters: Rosalyn Bendy, Ruby Dyer, Lenora Sullivan (Don), Mary Nowlin, Martha Berrien, Edna Jefferson (John); brother, Herman Adams Jr. (Linda) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
