OBITUARY

Doris Fay Santistevan

October 21, 1930November 20, 2021

Doris Fay Santistevan, 91 went home to be with Jesus on November 20, 2021. She is survived by her daughter Cheryl Santistevan, Stepdaughters Debbie Henson (John), and Terry Truitt (Bob). Grandchildren Eloy Santistevan III, Kelli Santistevan, Carl Henson, Angie Henson, Greg Truitt, and Rachel Truitt, brother Glen Barnett (Pat), and sister Elaine Barnett.

Doris Faye Santistevan was born as Doris Faye Barnett on October 21, 1930 to Edna Lorene and Samuel Alton Barnett. She was born during the depression era and learned to pick cotton at a very early age. Her father nick-named her Toppy because you could only see the top of her head in the cotton patch. She was known to get the cotton sack so heavy that she could no longer pull it behind her. Being the oldest daughter of seven children, she also worked hard in the home helping to care for her younger brothers and sisters.

At age 16, she graduated from Franklin High school and moved to Houston with a girlfriend. She worked at Battelstein’s Department Store in downtown Houston. During that time, she met a Sailor from Minnesota with a lifelong dream of becoming a pro-bowler. They began their life together in North East Houston. They had two children Raymond (deceased in 2017) and Cheryl. In 1973 she lost her husband due to a heart attack. They were in the process of building a home.

Being the fighter that she was, she got a job at the local dry cleaners and finished the home with the help of family, friends, and church members. She met her current husband, Eloy Santistevan, Sr. in 1983 while working at Randall’s Grocery store where she was the Deli Manager. They married in 1984. She lost her husband of 29 years in 2013 due to complications of a fall and subsequent surgery.

She had a very strong faith and trusted her Lord and Savior during much of the adversity that happened over the course of her life. She loved cooking, crocheting, gardening, and most of all taking care of her family.

Her favorite verse in the Bible is Luke 23:43. Jesus said to the sinner next to him on the cross, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with Me in paradise.”

To my dear friend Cheryl, and children Kelli and Eloy,

My heartfelt condolences on the loss of your sweet mother and grandmother. I really enjoyed reading the tribute to her on this site; she was an amazing, smart woman, with so much patience and foresight. Cheryl, you have that in you, too - the dedication, commitment and persistence to forge onward, even when times get tough - and I’ve seen it in action over and over. You are my inspiration more than you may know.

My sincere condolences to the family, and may God’s sweet child Doris now rest in abundant peace.

All my love,
Kristen Damon
