Doris Jean “DJ” (Guettner) Taylor, age 85 of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully April 2, 2024, with her daughter by her side. She was born April 24, 1938, in Shiner, Texas, an only child to Wylie & Emilie (Malina) Guettner.
Doris’ family moved to Houston, shortly after her birth, where she grew up in the Heights District. She loved school, especially math and basketball, where she was team captain her senior year. She met and married her former husband, Charles Dean Taylor in 1957. They moved to Virginia to begin their new life, where he was stationed in Army. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to Germany. She returned to Houston and began to work as bookkeeper/secretary, while living with her parents until he returned in 1963. That same year they welcomed the birth of their only child, Terrie Lynn.
Doris was a loving mother, homemaker and for many years a bookkeeper for their family business. She was a member and past Guard of the VFW Post 8790 Auxiliary, as well as member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She served as officer for the Yupon Homeowners association for many years. She loved the outdoors and spent many years hunting deer and birds on the many family hunting camps they were on. She enjoyed the fellowship and all the family time spent there. She loved to fish with her daddy and always looked forward to those Sunday flounder dinners. She devoted herself to all of Terrie’s activities. She was always first to volunteer for whatever was needed. She immersed herself in learning and assisting in raising all of the many FFA animal projects. She was a true patriot and spend endless hours volunteering and fundraising for veterans, as well as making Poppy displays for state and national competition. In addition, she enjoyed cooking, sewing, working with flowers and plants, but her true passion was drawing and oil painting. She created many beautiful paintings. She enjoyed going to the casinos in Las Vegas and Louisiana. After the loss of her father, she and her mother Emilie would often go on casino trips. But, most of all, she adored her faithful companion kitty, Lillie Rose.
She is preceded in death by her parents Wylie & Emilie Guettner and her former husband, Charles Dean Taylor. She is survived by her daughter, Terrie Lynn and husband Allan Crockett of Harlingen: grandsons Charles Allan (Carolina) Crockett and Andrew Hardy (Debbie) Crockett and five precious great-grandchildren; Wylie Crockett, Luisa Crockett, Bridgette Crockett, Emma Crockett and Kinsley Crockett, all of Harlingen.
The pall bearers are Allan Crockett, Charles Crockett, Andrew Crockett, and Mike Knox.
