Dorothy Doris "Dottie" Bell Ashford was born July 31, 1927, at home, with a midwife, in Houston Texas, weighing in at 12 pounds. She passed away July 6, 2016. Dorothy resided with her husband of 68 years, John Owen Ashford Senior, in Woodbranch Village, Texas.
She grew up in Houston "West End" attending Memorial Elementary, George Washington Junior High, and Reagan High School. She completed her studies at the Texas School of Business followed by working in a bank's proofs department.
As a child she attended the First Presbyterian Church of Houston. Dorothy was proud that the original building is now in the Historical Park in Downtown Houston.
Many churches benefited by the support and encouragement she and her husband John, of 68 years, gave.
Some of those churches included Fontaine Assembly of God, First Assembly of God In Spring Texas, and served for 16 years as deconess in Lakewood Church. In her retirement years she attended New Caney Family Worship Center Church of God. She loved the people and her pastors.
In addition to her service to God, she was a dedicated Homemaker for her husband John Owen and children Johnny and Doris.
She loved traveling, flowers, bird watching, cooking, decorating her home, eating out at Jack In The Box and Sonic.
For Dorothy, traveling was a big part of life. She was nicknamed "Mama Go." Once she finished one trip, she was busy planning another. Her travels included excursions all over the US, Europe, Alaska, and Mexico.
She is preceded in death by her mom, Mary Louise Bell; Dad, Lawrence Edgar Bell; Daughter, Cathy Jean Ashford; son Edgar Eldon Ashford; Grandson John Owen Ashford III; and sister Marie Louise Bell Maybin.
She is survived in life by husband John Owen Ashford Sr.; Son, John Owen Ashford Jr.; Daughter, Doris Dianne Ashford May; Daughter-in-law, Danielle Renee Marks Ashford; Son-in-law, Allen Quinn May; Grandchildren, Christine Null, Quinn May, Bret May, Samantha Preston and Steve Brock, five great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
If there were a scripture lesson that she would want to share with everybody, It would be to love each other and love on each other. These following scriptures were underlined in her Bible.
Galatians 6: 2. Bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of life.
Galatians 6:9 And let us not be weary in well-doing; for in due season we shall reap, If we not faint.
Galations 5:22 - 23. But, the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Dorothy would remind us, God is love, to live in love and love on each other.
Where is Dorothy now?
In Heaven, she is rejoicing with her family and friends.
On Earth, she is in our hearts JOYFULLY traveling with us wherever we go.
