Once diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Dorothy “Dede” Jamieson never gave up. She lived with her daughter, Dot and Dot’s husband Jim and their son Andrew for the past 4 years, until moving to Silverado Cypresswood the last two months of her life to receive the increasing care she required.
She died at Silverado Cypresswood with daughter, Clare, by her side on August 29.
Dorothy, known to the many children she cared for over the years as Dede, was born May 26, 1929, and grew up in Jersey City, N.J. where she met Lawrence “Larry” Jamieson. It was not long before the two were married, in December, 1950. They lived in Rutherford and Wayne, N.J. before moving their large family to Houston in 1967, with a stint in Las Vegas at Nellis AFB, where their first three of nine children were born.
Filled with compassion and interest in others, Dorothy made friends easily and maintained contact with many. She was an active member of St. John Vianney church and choir. After her divorce in 1970, she began providing childcare in her home – caring for infants to elementary age children. She was beloved by the children and parents and influenced the lives of many.
Before her illness, Dorothy loved being outdoors; working in the yard and making anything grow. She also loved participating in her grandkids many activities. Dorothy had a great flair for inventive Halloween costumes – one year she dressed herself up as a picnic table - tablecloth, plates and all.
Dorothy was an avid reader of the newspaper and of mysteries. As her illness progressed and she couldn’t remember what she read the day before, she was drawn more to TV mysteries and who-done-it series as it was easier to follow the characters and plot.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Patrick, Peggy, Marian, Clare, Thomas, Brian, Dot and Bubba. Her one child, Mary, died shortly after childbirth and is with her now. Her one remaining sibling, Janie, also survives her, as do many grandchildren and great grandchildren, Angela, Monica, Kimberly, Jennifer, Kyle, Miller, Hannah, Andrew, Cami, and Trip.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to any children’s organization or hospital would be an appropriate and appreciated way to celebrate her love of children.
Dorothy’s life will be celebrated in a visitation at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home on September 5, from 5-7pm and a Funeral Mass at St. John Vianney on September 6, at 10:30am with a
