Dorothy Mae O’Bryant was born in Newton, Texas, to L.C. and Ida Mae Knighton. From the start, she carried herself with warmth, quiet strength, and a spark that made her unforgettable. She graduated from Liberty High School in Newton, Texas and went on to earn her nursing degree from Prairie View A&M University, Class of 1954. Shortly after graduation she moved to Houston, Texas.
In 1954, Dorothy married Charles O’Bryant. During their marriage, they were blessed with four children. Dorothy made sure her children were raised in a home filled with faith, love, and strong values.
Dorothy dedicated her life to caring for others through a long and devoted career as a registered nurse. For decades she cared for patients, supported families and guided young nurses. For her, nursing was a calling—one she answered with skill, heart, and integrity.
Dorothy was a faithful member of Kashmere Gardens Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years. Dorothy served with quiet dedication and grace. Her steady presence and wisdom were a gift
to her church family and all who knew her.
In her later years, Dorothy moved to the Brookdale retirement community, where she served as a community ambassador, helping new residents adjust, feel welcome, and settle into their new home. Naturally warm and talkative, Dorothy had a way of making people feel at ease. Her gift for connection turned neighbors into friends and helped make Brookdale feel like home. It was there, surrounded by
the community she helped nurture, that she passed peacefully on
July 31, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Homer, Monroe, and T.L. Knighton; and her sister, Geneva Knapp.
She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Brooks; her children: Paula Boone, Mavourneen Compton, Tina Crawford (Kermit), and Antoine O’Bryant (Veronica); her grandchildren: Blaine Boone, Justin Compton (Janelle), Victoria Crawford (Adrian), Mary Hagans (Philip), and Jeremy Lee (Pam); and her great-grandchildren: Kaia, Andre, Ashton, Avery, Anden, Izabel, Nikolas, Tyrone, and Tiara. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Dorothy Mae O’Bryant lived a life of purpose, grace, and love.
She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
