Dorothy Ferreri Piazza was born on the 3rd of September 1929, and passed away peacefully on Monday, the 27th of July 2020, after a long battle with Leukemia.

She was born of Sicilian-American parents. Her maiden name was Dorothy Mae Ferreri. Her father and mother, Vito and Mary Pantaleo Ferreri immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Houston. She had two sisters and one brother, Francis Pollizzio, Joe Ferreri and Vita Rossi and then Dorothy was the baby.

She was a long time resident of Houston, a graduate of Reagan high school in 1946 and began her first career as a secretary at Reed Roller Bit. She met the love of her life, Joseph Michael Piazza whom she married on the 22nd of October 1950. They had five children, Joseph Michael Jr., Mary Donna, Daniel, Gary and Lisa. She was devoted to her family. Her every thought was centered on them. Her language of love was cooking, and she shared that love with all, never going anywhere without a plate of something delicious. She loved the Italian culture and was involved in the Amiketos club and the Charity Guild of St. Joseph. She was instrumental in helping prepare multiple St. Joseph’s Altars with her friends over many years. Her talent for creating decorative fig cookies was admired by all. They were works of art. She was a parishioner at St. Michael’s Catholic Church for 60 years, and it was here where her children attended grade school. She had a love for travel and had many opportunities to visit exotic locations all over the world as a travel agent. She retired in her 70’s to take care of her daughter Lisa during her illness. Our memories of travel with our mom, were always an adventure and we saw the world in a big way.

Her favorite travel spot was her bay house in San Leon, Texas, where she spent many enjoyable weekends and holidays with her family and friends.

Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren love her dearly and she will always hold a treasured place in our hearts.

She is preceded in the death by her mother and father; husband, Joseph Michael Piazza; daughter, Lisa Piazza Pace; brother, Joe Ferreri and sister, Vita Rossi. She is survived by her sister, Francis Pollizzio; her children, Dr. Joseph Michael Piazza Jr. and wife, Anne, her daughter, Mary Donna and husband, Eddie Hunter, her son, Dr. Daniel Piazza and his wife, Erin, and her son, Gary Piazza. Her grandchildren, Julianne and Shawn Galloway, Allison and Luis Batarse, Joseph Michael Piazza III, Cara Piazza, Michael Piazza and Matthew Piazza. Her great grandchildren, Luis and John Paul Batarse and Waylon Galloway We can’t forget sweet Lance, her devoted grand dog who stood by her side till the end.

We’d like to thank all of our dear friends and family who have expressed their love for her. Special thanks to Dr. Susan Escudier and her staff at Texas Oncology. Their expertise and compassion during her illness was without peer.

To Mary & Eddie Hunter, Joe Mike & Anne Piazza, Danny & Erin Piazza, Gary Piazza and families, aunt Dorothy will be missed. Great memories growing up when all our families would get together in San Leon at the different bay homes. Fun and food and laughter and hard work. The St Joseph Altar that we all enjoyed and the beautiful art pieces that Frances, Vita and Dorothy made for the altar. God Bless You all and may aunt Dorothy be reunited with loved ones in heaven. Mrs Piazza was such an amazing woman. She was the epitome of a Matriarch. She was such a pleasure to be around and always shared a bit of her wisdom with me every time I saw her. She raised an amazing family and so many who were proud to know her. We will miss her terribly however, Heaven gained an amazing Angel.

Having lived only a block away, I spent a lot of time with the Piazza family when Mary Donna and I attended St. Michael's together and then again after high school. I'm so grateful to have been included in so many family gatherings, weekends at the bay house, and untold number of sumptuous meals and sleepovers. I'd easily find an excuse to have Italian food at their home just as Mary Donna enjoyed Mexican food at mine.

Those times were a part of my childhood I cherish. Thank you, Dorothy, for having been a part of my life. I wish the Piazza family peace and healing.

Mary Donna I’m so sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. On behalf of the entire Palermo clan, we loved her very much. Our families’ paths kept crossing at St. Michael’s in Houston, St. Mary’s in Texas City, and of course who else lives in San Leon, Texas?!

My favorite memory of your mother was when she contacted my father after learning we were heading back to Sicilia in the early ‘90s. I met her and picked up a small cardboard package to take to Campu Beddu di Mazara. With the assistance of my uncle we found your Panteleo cugini, handed over the gift, and enjoyed a wonderful meal with them. They were so appreciative of your mother’s generosity and we were honored that she entrusted us with such a special gift. Truly a beautiful soul.

I never met Mrs. Piazza, but I know through stories and comments of Dr. Joe Mike , what a great mother and motivating motivating influence on her children and grandchildren, she must have been.

Bettie and I extend our deepest sympathies and love to the entire Piazza family. God bless, and take joy in remembering all of the good times and lessons of life shared with Mrs. Piazza.

As a forever friend of Mary Donna from St. Agnes high school and then as art majors at U of H together I have fond memories of Dorothy. She always had something cooking on that stove! I don’t know if she wrote anything down but I would definitely buy her cookbook! I think she had the greatest smile. If I go to a shoe repair the smell of leather brings memories of the Galleria shop. I grew up in an Irish family so Dorothy gave me exposure to how great it was to have a Italian family with their tight bonds and love of heritage. There is a party in heaven tonight-Dorothy brought the pots and pans

We’re so sad to not have Grandma Piazza with us here. We’ll miss her smile and her warm welcome always. She always had a story to tell at the bay and was so proud of her beautiful family. We’re so sorry that we can’t be with you, the Piazzas, right now due to everything going on, but we’re praying for you constantly and send you all our love. We love you so much, Grandma Piazza.

Sweet Dorothy, a wonderful person inside and out. Loved her cooking, her discipline, her ambition. She was such a good role model. Favorite memories are at the bay house, family dinners, jumping on the trampoline, visiting Joe at the shoe shop, and just being together. I hope God opens the gates of heaven for her. She is safe in his loving arms and we are ALL better for having Dorothy in our lives, I loved her so much.

As the mother of my dear friends Mary Donna and her husband Eddie, Dorothy welcomed me into her extended family and I got a glimpse of what being a part of a large, loving Italian family was like. Dorothy was a unique and formidable woman who had met many challenges in her life with courage and grace. My home is filled with wonderful memories of my time with Dorothy, Aunt Sis, Mary Donna, and Eddie. Their generosity of spirit in helping me through the loss of my spouse and the renovation of my home will live in my heart forever. May God's amazing grace bring comfort to all who mourn the loss of Dorothy Piazza.
