She was born in Jacksonville, Texas on the 26th of September 1912, the second of six children of Lillian and James Collins Ross. Dorsey worked as a women’s fashion buyer for the J.L. Brown Department store in Jacksonville and her sense of style and love of fine clothing and fabrics stayed with her the rest of her life. In 1947 she married James J. Halbouty and moved to Houston to begin her new life as a loving wife and devoted mother to her two boys, Jim and Tom.
Dorsey was a 6th generation Texan. She was fiercely proud of her family and traced her lineage to the Revolutionary War. She was an organizing member of the James Hardage Lane Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, an organizing member and past president of the Texas Star Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and a member of the Dallas Texas Chapter of the Dames of the Court of Honor. Dorsey was a descendant, through her father, of Brigadier General Elijah Isaacs and Captain Thomas Gillespie, both of whom served in the American Revolution. Her great grandfather, Allen Roberts, was a colonizer and soldier of the Republic of Texas.
Dorsey was a cheerful and loving lady, a wonderful wife and mother. She was an avid gardener and loved her roses. She is preceded in death by her dear husband of 61 years, James J. Halbouty, her parents, and her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son James R. Halbouty of Houston, son Thomas C. Halbouty & wife Fran of Southlake, Texas, and grandsons David Halbouty and Joseph Halbouty, both of Dallas.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Enid Anderson, Melva Vernon, Valerie Rodriguez, and Sylvia Reyes for their exceptional care. Mom’s long life can be attributed in part to the loving care she received from her caregivers and from her devoted son, James R. Halbouty.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five until eight o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 1st of February, in the drawing room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
