Dr. Bruce Edward Barnum, renowned Texas Cardiologist, passed away after an extended battle with cancer at Houston Methodist Hospital on Sunday, December 10, 2023, in Houston, Texas at the age of 73. Bruce is survived by his wife, two sons and a sister. He is preceded in death by both his parents.
Bruce was born on December 23, 1949, in Roslyn, New York to Vivian J and Corwin H Barnum. Bruce earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971. He later obtained his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in 1978. Later that year he received a license to practice medicine in the State of Texas. In 1979, he was designated a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Bruce served as Medical Chief Resident at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in 1981. He was designated a Diplomate, certified in Internal Medicine by The American Board of Internal Medicine during his tenure at St Luke’s. He served as Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiology in the department of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in 1983. In 1985 he was Designated a Diplomate, certified in cardiovascular disease, by The American Board of Internal Medicine. Bruce amassed several awards and accolades throughout his forty-three-year medical career. He was an avid member of several Medical Societies including American Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society and American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Barnum left an indelible legacy as a mentor, teacher, friend and scholar. He trained more than 25 junior medical fellows and over 120 cardiologists and interventional cardiologists. Bruce was a pillar in the medical community and helped countless people overcome the fear of medical treatment with his calm demeanor and delightful sense of humor. Bruce was a dedicated husband and father. Family time was very important to him, and he made many sacrifices to enjoy time with his family. He will be fondly remembered for his wit, his insatiable desire to learn and the love he had for his family and friends.
The family will hold a private ceremony to celebrate Bruce’s life. A date, time and location will be determined later. The family would like to thank the hospital staff at Houston Methodist Hospital for all their efforts.
