Edmund was born May 13, 1941, in Mawan Town, Tianmen City, Hubei Province, China, and left his home at an early age due to political turmoil and civil war. His father took him and his older brother to Hong Kong, and they eventually settled in Indonesia. Edmund attended boarding school there and heard the gospel from a Methodist missionary, allowing him to come to faith in Christ. Edmund’s family moved to Brazil in the late 1960s, and he went on to study at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Edmund met and married Diana Hao in Brazil. They emigrated to New York, where Edmund pursued a technical career as a draftsman involved in traffic studies. In 1981, the Lius settled in Houston, Texas, with their three children, and Edmund continued to use his skills in the oil and gas industry, working for companies such as Getty Oil and Texaco, as well as a small firm, Seismic Data Search.
As a single dad to all three kids starting in 1986, Edmund was a steady, responsible father. He was a Rockets and Astros fan and enjoyed watching sports and shooting hoops. Notably, Edmund was faithful in bringing his family to church, and the family has fond memories of fellowshipping with Houston Chinese Church’s Alief Fellowship, the Chinese mission at Southwest Calvary Baptist Church, and then moving to Chinese Christian Church and Chinese Bible Church. In recent years, Edmund often said “God bless you,” and spontaneously exclaimed such statements as, “Jesus is risen!” and “Praise the Lord!”
Edmund was preceded in death by his parents, Zu Fa Liu and Chun Xiu Yang, older brother Tek Sheng Liu, younger brother Tek Qing Liu, and niece Swie Lan Liu-Rosa. He is survived by his younger sister Yang Xiang Liu (Hua Sheng Chen); son Paulo Liu (Julia); daughter Jessie Kirkpatrick (Evan); son Francis “Frank” Liu; grandchildren: James Kirkpatrick, Tabitha Liu, and Jayden Liu; and nephews and nieces: Phe Tjang Liu, Phe Tjiang Liu, Phe Shiung Liu, Swie Eng Liu, Swie Lian Liu, Pingbo Liu, and Bibo Liu.
The family would like to thank all the friends and family, assisted living workers, and especially the staff of West Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation, who have been a part of Edmund’s care and encouragement over the years.
