Elizabeth was called to her eternal home on Valentine’s weekend just after attending mass at St. Cyril’s Church. “Betty Jean” was born into the large, close-knit family of William and Mary Hilz in Pilot Point, Texas. After completing her RN degree from St. Paul’s in Dallas and working as a nurse, she met Richard Bernhardt whom she married on May 2, 1959. Their courtship and beyond included many nights of dining and dancing the night away. Dick and Betty were happily married for 52 years and were devoted to raising their four children. After a 30 year hiatus from nursing, Betty completed a challenging recertification. She loved caring for her patients and was coaxed into becoming Head Nurse because of her calmness under pressure. Betty and Dick shared a lifelong dedication to their Catholic faith and were among the earliest members of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, where Betty served as Eucharistic Minister for 50 years. She continued her lifelong spiritual growth by participating in Bible study and retreats. Betty enjoyed volunteering at Charity Guild, and her dear friendships within Lakeside Women’s Club and several bridge groups, which endured more than 40 years. Betty spent many happy years on the tennis court, where she made great friends and won most of her matches. More recently she enjoyed exercise class at the Tracy Gee Community Center. Betty found great fulfillment in being a wife, Mom, and Grandma. She truly enjoyed creating a nurturing home for her family and making special meals for her grandkids who brightened her years after Dick’s passing. We are grateful that Betty was able to lead a full and balanced life until the moment of her passing. As the heart of our family, Betty leaves a beautiful legacy of compassion, grace, wisdom, strength, and service. Betty is survived by her children Mary, Tricia, Tom and Sarah, son-in-law Sean Clements, daughter-in-law Jessica, beloved grandchildren Delilah, Fiona, and Lola, sister Mollie and brothers John, Bob, and Jim, and many other family members. Donations in Betty’s honor may be made to the Charity Guild of Catholic Women or the West Houston Assistance Ministry.
