As a young woman she worked as a groomer and handler of horses at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She had a lifelong love of horses, country music, and cowboy culture. As an adult she moved to Lufkin, TX with her grandmother Mimmie and was finally able to get a horse of own; Sugarfoot. Liz cared for and loved that horse like no one else could have. He was the luckiest ex-race horse ever. Later in life Liz moved back to Houston and worked at The St. Vincent DePaul Society resale store. She also became a Life Member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She was a longtime resident of the Orchard at Garden Oaks apartments and enjoyed playing Canasta and dominoes with her many friends. Her candid color commentary endeared her to many. Candor came naturally to Liz. She was a terrible liar, which is the hallmark of an honest person. Liz will be missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, JH Houghton, Jr. and Mary Alice Houghton. She is survived by her sister Hazel Houghton and brother Hank Houghton, her nephews, Jay Houghton and his wife Marijke Ellenbas, Robert Houghton, Thomas Houghton and his wife Dana Burns, and grand nieces, Annemieke, Shoshanah, and Ava Houghton.
