With our hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father Elwyn Noel Culver, Jr. who departed our earthly company for heavenly pursuits early in the morning of October 1, 2026. A man of exceptional character, unfailing humor and a fierce loyalty to his family and friends, he lived a life full of tradition, adventure and loving companionship.
A man of many roles and names, Elwyn – “Buster” to his friends and family – made lasting connections with the people whose life he touched. To his wife of 49 years, Lynn, he was a best friend, and a loving partner. He was a devoted son to his mother Clara Kaufmann, 96, and engaged father, or just “Dad,” to his children Ryan and Laura Wiener with her husband Josh. Buster was close with his siblings Jan Schultz and Scott, who knew him as “Sunshine” when they wanted to tease him during childhood. Later in his life, he took on maybe his most “Pop”ular name, given to him by his grandchildren Emily, Landon, Leighton, Parker and Molly.
From his small-town Texas beginnings in Overton, Buster built his life in Houston and graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1971. He was a proud member of the Fighting Texas Aggie class of 1975, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets Air Force Squadron “Huslin” One. Their motto, “Second to None,” embodies the initiative Buster lived during his life. Whether he was building a DIY project at his home with Lynn, leading troop 1276 of Boy Scouts of America with Ryan or returning serves from Laura in the backyard volleyball court he built, Buster was uncompromising about giving full effort to love his family with his mind, body and soul. He was also an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and camping as often as he could get out of the city. He also loved training and hunting with his labrador retrievers: Maizie, Pepper and Daisy. While indoors, his favorite activities were reading and chasing his grandchildren around the house; he will always be their favorite tickle monster.
His loving family is hosting a celebration of life in his honor at Houston Oaks Country Club Pavilion, 22602 Hegar Road in Hockley on Friday, October 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please RSVP here to allow for a headcount. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, MD Anderson Cancer Center, or the charity of your choice.
