

Erma was a dedicated student. She graduated as valedictorian from Chandler High School in 1951, then went on to earn highest honors at Tyler Junior College in 1953. She continued her education at the University of North Texas in Denton, earning her BBA with highest honors in January 1955. She was honored with the Pi Omega Pi Award. She subsequently obtained an MBA at the University of North Texas graduating with highest honors in January 1956. She was honored with the Smead Award as the outstanding undergraduate student and later honored with the award again as the outstanding graduate student.
On July 28, 1956, Erma married Sam Reasoner, Jr., in Denton, Texas. The couple made their first home together in Midland, Texas, where they lived from 1956 until 1963. Erma taught school in Midland from 1956 to 1961. In July 1963, they moved to Houston to a home on Hillcroft in the Westbury subdivision. They remained there for the rest of their lives together. After Sam died, Erma stayed on Hillcroft until Hurricane Harvey flooded her home. Erma then moved to the Villages of Tanglewood, and later the Villages of River Oaks.
Erma and Sam were blessed with two daughters. Laura and Diane. Both graduated from high school and college. Diane became a teacher, like her mother. Erma was a Presbyterian.
Erma was predeceased by Sam on June 18, 1992, and by Laura Reasoner on August 10, 2024. She was also predeceased by her brother, Roy Cleburn Cooley (1929–1991). She is survived by her daughter, Diane Reasoner Nolen (Rand Nolen), and her granddaughter, Samantha Marie Nolen, along with three nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
