Gene was born on March 12, 1931, in Salina, Kansas to Mary and Louis Grammar. In 1944 the family moved to San Antonio, Texas. Gene graduated from Brackenridge High School, then St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and served in the army during the Korean War.
Gene met the love of his life Janis Dromgoole on a blind date and married her 8 months later, on August 6, 1955, in the chapel at St. Mary’s University. One month later the couple moved to Houston where they celebrated 66 years of adventure together.
After one year of dental school Gene became a pharmaceutical salesman. After the birth of the couple’s only child, Leslie, he tired of travelling and, together with a partner, became a Burger King franchisee. Together the partners grew the business to 19 stores over 35 years before retiring and selling the business.
Gene loved his three grandsons, playing “tackle time” here in Houston or at his home in Galveston. While in Galveston Gene also loved to cast a net for shrimp, trap crabs, and fish.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brother Nicolas, and wife Janis. He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Grammar Davis, and her husband Ernest; grandsons Wayne Davis and his wife Lauren, Philip Davis, and James Davis; and many other extended family.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to one of Gene’s favorite charities – Alzheimer’s research, the SPCA, or cancer research – or another charity of your choice.
