It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ernest “Ernie” Howerton, who left this world peacefully on September 16, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on November 3, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas, Ernie was the beloved son of Ernest and Bessie Howerton.
Ernie grew up with an adventurous spirit, sharing countless memories with his sisters, Betsy and Carolyn, of bareback horse riding, barefoot water skiing, and building cars and car engines.
Ernie began college at Colorado State University, where he learned how to ski but not to study. He soon transferred back to University of Texas in Austin, where he joined Sigma Nu fraternity and thrived both academically and socially. After graduating from UT, Ernie pursued his passion for medicine, earning both his master’s degree and medical degree from University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas. He completed his residency at University of Texas Medical School at Houston, specializing in ophthalmology.
It was during his time in Galveston that Ernie met the love of his life, Janey Thayer. Together, they built not only a thriving ophthalmology practice in Austin—where Janey skillfully managed the office while Ernie performed surgeries—but also a beautiful life rooted in love, respect, and partnership.
In retirement, Ernie found great joy tending to his ranch and raising longhorns. When he had completed all the projects he set out to do, he sold the ranch and discovered a peaceful sanctuary in Sargent, Texas, where the quiet and open skies brought him deep serenity.
Ernie leaves behind his beloved wife Janey, his sisters Betsy Babbington and Carolyn Schaffer, and a wide circle of brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Ernie quietly touched countless lives with his generosity, kindness, and gracious willingness to help anyone in need. Those who knew him will remember his warm heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for his family.
In lieu of flowers, have a toast in his honor and pay forward the generosity Ernie shared so freely every day.
