Ester was born in Houston, Texas on December 6, 1940, to the late Abel and Teresa Ortiz. She married Rosalio G. Cena in 1961; they were married for 37 years.
Ester dedicated much of her life to caring for her family and creating a warm, welcoming home. As a homemaker, she took great pride in caring for those she loved, and throughout her life she also enjoyed working various jobs that allowed her to stay active, meet people, and fill her time. In her later years, Ester served as a Bus Attendant for Aldine I.S.D., where she helped care for Special Education children with patience, kindness, and compassion. Her gentle spirit and nurturing heart made a difference in the lives of many children and families.
Ester was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. To many, she was simply known as “Grandma,” a name that reflected the love, comfort, and care she shared so freely. She enjoyed traveling, sharing meals, shopping, and spending time surrounded by family. A devoted Catholic, Ester’s faith was an important part of her life and guided the way she loved and served others.
Her home was always open to everyone, and it became a gathering place for holidays, birthdays, and countless family celebrations. Ester had a special way of bringing people together and making each person feel welcome. The memories created in her home, the meals shared around her table, and the love she gave so generously will remain treasured by all who knew her.
Ester is survived by her three children, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren: her son, Rosalio O. Cena Jr., and his daughters, Melinda, Miranda, and Melanie; her son, Robert O. Cena, and his children, Nicole and Robert; her daughter, Patricia A. de Leon; Patricia’s husband, Rogelio de Leon; and their children, Rogelio, Venice, and Rosalio. She is also survived by her grandson, Lee Torres; Lee’s wife, Kourtney Torres; and their son, Trent, as well as many beloved great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were touched by her love and presence.
Ester was preceded in death by her husband, Rosalio G. Cena; her parents, Abel and Teresa Ortiz; and her four siblings, Caroline Mungia, Olga Burciaga, Alberto Ortiz, and Anita Ortiz.
