She attended Jack Yates High School in the early 1940’s. Ethel was a homemaker and a breast cancer survivor for over 50 years.
Ethel was united in holy matrimony to the late Ernest Smither, Sr. in 1943 and to that union were born 4 four children: Beverly Diane Smither-McDaniel (deceased), Ernest Smither, Jr.(deceased), Glenn Ray Smither (deceased), and Wendy Kay Smither.
Ethel joined Mt.Vernon United Methodist Church on January 17, 1954 and was a faithful member of 68 years until her health failed. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Pacesetters and served as Membership Intake Secretary.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her last surviving child, Wendy Kay Smither; her brother, Louis Edward Thompson (Debra); 1 grandchild. Ernest Smither, III (Shelby) of Boston, Ma.; 2 great grandchildren, Sierra Joi and Ernest John (EJ) Smither IV (Boston, Ma.); 1 daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Smither (Ernest Smither, Jr.-deceased); 2 devoted nieces, Detra Christmon-Burnside and Amber ThompsonWilliams; 3 nephews, Horace Christmon, Jr. (Livia); William Andrews, and Giovanny Thompson; 2 great nephews, Desmond Burnside, and Derrick Christmon; 5 great nieces, April Wright, Samesa Christmon, Destinie Burnside, Allie and Leah Williams; 3 great-great nieces and 4 great-great nephews. Her dearest lifelong friend and cousin-in-law, Emma Jenkins (LM Jenkins-deceased); Her dearest cousin, Maxine Bell; a host of cousins and her church family, Mt. Vernon UMC.
