1931 – 2021
Evelyn Marie Castle, age 89 years, entered into eternal rest on January 19, 2021 in Katy, TX following a recent stoke.
Evelyn was born in Arp, Texas near Troup on May 24, 1931 to Bascom Sherman West and Maudie Lou Collins West. She was raised in East Texas and met the love of her life there, Robert “Bob” Castle. Bob and Evelyn were married after he enlisted in the US Navy. They spent their wedding night in Hollywood. Evelyn followed Bob to Hawaii and San Diego while he was in his military service. They lived in Lubbock until Bob’s graduation from Texas Tech College. By then Evelyn and Bob had four children and relocated to Midland, then Houston for Bob’s employment. As empty nesters they moved to Colorado and then Saudi Arabia. Sadly, Bob passed in 1984 of brain cancer. Evelyn had to pull her resources together. And she did. She prospered. She helped her family and many other people. Bob would have been so very proud of her.
Evelyn’s favorite hobby was gardening. If she saw a seed pod during an outing or vacation, you can bet it was in her pocket headed home for her to propagate. She could grow amazing plants of all kinds. If you knew Evelyn, you’d know that she’d love lots of flowers surrounding her at her funeral.
Grant me the wisdom to know what I can change. Mom thought she could bring about change and betterment in our lives and continued to try again and again, always trying to make someone or someone’s life better. The strings she attached were actually leads intended to show a better path, if followed.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. “Bob” Castle, parents, Bascom Sherman West and Maudie Lou Collins West of Henderson, TX; her siblings Lucille Byrd (Rudolph) of Tyler, TX; Minion “Jack” West of Henderson, TX; Velma Jo “Josie” Noel of Lufkin, TX; and Elsie Mae Portis of Lufkin, TX. Additionally, she had to endure the passing of her son, Robert Lee “Bobby” Castle of Colorado Springs, CO and her grandson Christopher Michael Wigstone of Birmingham, AL.
She is survived by her three daughters and daughter-in-law: Jarie Lewis (Ron) of Itasca, TX; Pamela Jones Castle of Colorado Springs, CO; Gail Mugford (Chuck) of Leeland, NC; and Elaine Mattheus (Heiko) of Katy, TX; along with eight grandchildren: Thad Johnson (Delia), Jennifer Sweeney (Sean), Kelli Bennett (Mike), Cody Lewis, Christy Lewis, Shawna Shelton, Danielle Mugford, Nik Mattheus (Heather Fields), and 10 great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family interment will be held at the Castle family estate in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston, TX.
May flights of angels sing thee to thy heavenly rest.
