Frances Evelyn Hackfield (known as Mom and Aunt Fanny to her family) died Wednesday, March 19, 2025. Born in Cisco, Texas on December 18, 1930, Frances was the youngest of five sisters (no brothers!) She was raised in Cisco and Houston and graduated from Cisco Jr. College where she met her future husband, Rudy. Shortly after graduating college, they moved to Knox City Texas where they married and started their family. Frances went to work at the local Cameron Lumber Yard where she was their bookkeeper. Frances was very creative and well-liked by customers, so it was just a matter of time before they also put her on the sales floor. Frances was responsible for selling paint, wallpaper, and draperies that Cameron offered both in the store and by catalog. She was very successful in all her roles and customers would come far and wide to shop with Frances. Shortly after the birth of their fourth child (all boys!) the family moved to Odessa, Texas. By then Rudy had gotten into business for himself and Frances was there to help him every step of the way. In addition to raising her four boys, and helping her husband with his business, she got her real estate license and went to work selling residential real estate. Always wanting to create more opportunities for their family, Rudy and Frances moved their boys (now young men) to Houston in 1975. Frances was a homemaker but still very involved with helping Rudy in his business. Rudy passed away unexpectedly in 1987. After that, Frances went back to work very successfully in both Real Estate and with a local decorating company. Later, she also helped her son Danny with his construction and carpet businesses taking on various roles. Frances retired full-time in 1995. In 2000 she moved to Pearland Texas to be close to two of her sons that lived there.
Frances was the best Sister, Wife, Mom, and Aunt ever! She loved the outdoors and the trips the family would take together fishing, hunting, or camping. She was a loving and loyal friend. Her bridge friends, her tennis friends, her talking on the phone friends, her neighbor friends, her gambling friends and her family friends. Frances had a great sense of humor, and she loved to laugh and have fun. Frances was caring and extremely generous and would help anyone with anything. She was also creative, intelligent, strong and independent. As Frances got older, she enjoyed volunteering, decorating, painting, cooking big meals, and visits from her family. She also enjoyed her books, her computer, her puzzles and her shows. One of her favorites was watching and feeding the birds and squirrels in her backyard.
Frances lived by herself in her own home in Pearland, Texas. And, until her death at the age of 94, she needed little assistance except for the last couple of years. About five months ago, she was hospitalized with COVID. When she came home from the hospital, Frances needed more help and was placed in Home Hospice. From her own home, she was able to receive excellent care and enjoy most all of her favorite past times until the very end. This included her ritual cups of morning hot tea and delicious home cooked meals. Two weeks before her death, Frances was switched to protein infused liquids, Jello, and ice cream. Even though Frances had conditions that would cause anyone pain, she never complained and did not ask for much in the way of pain medicine. She remained brave, strong, and upbeat until the very end, when she was ready to go. Frances was constantly surrounded by her family and loved ones, during her time in Hospice, and they were by her side again when she peacefully passed to be with her Lord.
The Family would like to express our gratitude to everyone who has helped Mom along the way. We especially want to thank Mary Chavis for her long dedication and friendship with Mom. We also want to thank Whitney Chavis as well as Belinda Cambell and all the great staff at Senior Helpers. In addition, we want to mention Aaryan Hospice and their wonderful staff of schedulers, nurses, wound care specialists, and equipment personnel who cared for Mom.
Frances is preceded in death by her parents, Ellon and Lloyd Surles, and her sisters, Loydellon Burnette, Betty Lou Boyd, June Riddle and Mary Lee Huffman along with her niece Billie June Wilson. She is survived by her sons Lynn Hackfield, Danny Hackfield, David Hackfield, Darryl Hackfield and Dawn Weber along with nieces Mary Lou Dill, Debbie McCartney and her husband Larry, Karen Barry and her husband Paul as well as Cheryl Farr and her family.
