Francisco Antonio Soria

Born October 30, 1952, in Venezuela, Francisco built a distinguished career as a Captain and Master Mariner in the Venezuelan merchant marine, graduating from the Venezuelan Merchant Marine Academy in 1975. He sailed vessels for the Compañía Anónima Venezolana de Navegación — the CAVN — during the company's golden era, a career defined by discipline, dedication, and great pride in his work. He loved being at sea, which gave him the opportunity to travel the world and visit so many countries.

He later moved ashore, taking a position with CAVN that brought his family first to New York City and ultimately to Houston. There, he continued his career in international shipping, serving in operations leadership for companies working out of the ports of Houston and Galveston — remaining connected to the maritime world that had defined him. Houston became his home for the rest of his life.

Francisco was a man of principle. He believed in personal responsibility, in doing work well and standing behind it, and in placing family above all else. He faced the considerable challenges of his final years with the same quiet resilience that had defined him throughout his life, sustained always by the unwavering devotion of his wife, Cherokee.

Nothing mattered more to Francisco than his family. He was a devoted grandfather who tried to attend every baseball game or soccer match Axel and Ayla played, showing up the way he showed up for everything — with dedication and pride. He built every piñata, fixed every toy and built every playset. As a doting grandfather, Francisco loved sitting with the whole family around a table, and few things made him happier than a sushi dinner with the kids.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cherokee; his son, Chester; his daughter, Chiara; his son-in-law, Hilmer Castillo; his grandchildren, Axel and Ayla; his sister, Laura; and his nieces and nephews, Andrea, Rebecca, Roberto, Daniel, Maria Theresa and Lourdes. He was preceded in death by his father, Francisco Soria; his mother, Luisa; his brother, Alberto; and his sister, Angela.

Nada importaba más que su familia. Fue un abuelo entregado que procuraba no perderse ningún partido de béisbol ni de fútbol en el que jugaran Axel y Ayla, presentándose como se presentaba ante todo — con dedicación y orgullo. Construía cada piñata, arreglaba cada juguete y armaba cada juego. Como el abuelo que era, Francisco amaba sentarse con toda la familia alrededor de una mesa y pocas cosas lo hacían más feliz que una cena de sushi con los nietos.

Le sobreviven su esposa durante 45 años, Cherokee; su hijo, Chester; su hija, Chiara; su yerno, Hilmer Castillo; sus nietos, Axel y Ayla; su hermana, Laura; y sus sobrinos, Andrea, Rebecca, Roberto, Daniel, María Teresa y Lourdes. Le precedieron en la muerte su padre, Francisco Soria, su madre, Luisa, su hermano, Alberto, y su hermana, Ángela.
