

.Gene Helen Jackson, 97, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at her home in Houston, Texas. She was born May 2, 1919 in Glen Flora, Texas to George Slaughter and Audrey Post Slaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard W. Jackson and son, David H. Jackson and sisters Susan Story and Ruth Montgomery. She graduated from Texas Women’s University in 1940 with a Library Science degree and was a librarian at the University of Houston, M.D. Anderson Library for 25 years. Books about history and politics were her passion. Gene once said about her work at the University, “I can’t believe they pay me to do this.” She was a past president of the retiree’s association at the university. She was a member of the Comfort Wood chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) in Wharton, Texas from 1986 – 2012 and is a current member of the Heritage Trails chapter of the DAR in Spring, TX. Gene is survived by her daughters, Pam Jackson and Martha Oberle and husband Ted; daughter-in-law D’Juanna, Jackson; grandson, Daniel Jackson and wife Megan, granddaughter Gentry Jackson; and great grandchildren, Davis Jackson and Maura Jackson and nephew and numerous nieces. The family would like to thank Barbara (a.k.a. Bertha) Ross for the special care and kindness she bestowed on our Mother for the last year and a half. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 1 PM-2 PM at American Heritage Funeral Home with Funeral Service beginning at 2 PM. Interment is Monday, November 28, 2016 at 2 PM at Veterans Houston National Cemetery.
