Geneva McQueen Edwards (affectionately called Meme) was the youngest girl of 13 children born to George McQueen and Missie Perryman McQueen on September 28, 1923 in Camden, Texas. She out lived all of her siblings.
She was proposed to via telegram and 3 days later married Lonnie Edwards Sr. in Houston, Texas on July 12, 1944. To this union three children were born: Lonnie Edwards Jr., Linda Walker, and Judith Edwards Randle.
Geneva received a scholarship to attend Huston-Tillotson University in Austin. She completed one year at Huston, transferred and graduated from Texas Southern University in 1956 with a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics.
At age 19 she attended welding school and worked at a California shipyard. She also trained as a Level Three Plate Welder for North American Aircraft who made the Mitchell Bomber 29 airplane that was used to fight in World War II.
She enjoyed entertaining, gardening, gourmet cooking, canning and playing dominoes with her family. She had an artistic eye and could replicate an outfit from sight. She was an excellent seamstress, loved to entertain and serve others. She also taught for 27 years in the Houston Independent School District.
Her greatest accomplishment was symbolizing her dedication to Jehovah and was baptized in May 1959 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She loved Jehovah, the Christian meetings and her Christian family. Her strong faith and reliance on Jehovah helped her endure many trials with joy. She loved pioneering and teaching others the truth about God’s word.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lonnie Sr., her son Lonnie Jr. and her grandson Michael.
She is survived by her two girls, Linda and Judith, seven grandchildren: Lonnie III, Clory, Lotranda, Vawnda, Calenzo and Shermel. Also, she leaves to mourn twelve great grandchildren: Cred’jun, Brittney, Kiana, Jasmine, Brianna, Lonnie Harrison, Michael Jr., Aaron, Mykala, Riyah, Jacob and Langston. She is survived by three great-great grandchildren: Sophia, A’miriah and Randall Jr., a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
