Beloved husband, father, and friend, George Otto Mejlaender III joined the cloud of witnesses
peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, December 29, 2021. He enjoyed good health for many
full years and also endured the reality of cancer for 13 years. Through all the difficulty, George
remained happy, optimistic, encouraging and a courageous warrior to all who knew him.
Family
He is survived by his wife, Iris; his daughters: Amanda, her husband Dom; Cecilia, her husband
Maijon, and their child Zion. In addition, his sister, Debbie and her husband Mac Pike; nephews
Scott and Bryan Yancy, and niece Sarah Selden Baugh and her husband, Mark; and their two
children; and his Uncle Jim, his wife Billy Chapman, and their adult children Joe and Dewey
Chapman.
George was born in San Antonio in 1954 and moved to the Memorial area of Houston as a child
where he grew up and attended school. He had an active childhood that involved sail boat
races, ranch vacations, and bike rides with his friends. He attended Memorial High School and
graduated in 1972, where he was well known and well loved. He was accepted into The
University of Texas at Austin where he received a degree in Petroleum Land Management.
While attending college, He lost his parents and little brother in a private plane crash.
Devastated, George accepted the loss and learned to appreciate each day to the fullest.
Professional Life
After graduation from college, George worked as a land man at Hafner & Associates for several
years before becoming an independent landman promoting his own oil and gas deals. Years
later, he attended law school to learn contracts and claims and he said, ”God tricked him into
becoming a lawyer.” He continued his career practicing multiple types of law, having his own
private law practice for 20+ years.
Spiritual Life
George did not grow up in a religious household. His first spiritual encounter was at 35 years old
where he radically changed his beliefs and began to live in awareness of his Spirit and gave his
life to Christ. His first church was World Wide Church of God where he met his beautiful wife,
Iris. Later, He and his wife became faithful members of Encourager Church where they chose to
raise their family.
