Gibson was born in Waco, Texas on February 27th, 1962 to David and Barbara Henington. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1985, and soon began teaching at Fonville Middle School in Houston, Texas, where he taught until 2004. Gibson then accepted a position at Grady Middle School (later re-named Tanglewood Middle School), where he taught 6th Grade World Cultures from 2004 until his retirement in 2024.
Much of Gibson’s passion revolved around his role as a teacher. He was well-known for his creative ideas to get his students engaged in the learning material, for which he earned Teacher of the Year honors during the 2006-2007 school year. He was also instrumental in transforming Tanglewood Middle School into a National Wildlife Federation Eco-School through the establishment of a garden that serves as a way station for migratory monarch butterflies. In 2018, the monarch garden was recognized as a Certified Schoolyard Habitats Site, thanks to the hard work and determination of Gibson and his students.
Gibson was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, James Holtz. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Sharon Henington; son, Jack Henington (wife Danielle); brothers, Mark Henington (wife Belinda) and Paul Henington; nieces, Paige Deimund (husband Matt) and Emily Henington; sister-in-law, Susan Wright Holtz; nephews-in-law, William Holtz (wife Katie) and Edward Holtz; and cousins, grandnieces, and grandnephew. He will always be remembered as a wonderful family man, devoted teacher, and loyal friend.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
