Gilbert Fred Hartmann, 89, passed away on March 5, 2014. He was born on September 21, 1924 in Rutersville, Texas. Gilbert was the only son of Joseph and Henrietta Tiemann Hartmann and graduated from LaGrange High School. In 1946, after his service in the Army in WWII, he moved to Houston with his loving wife Eurleen Markwardt Hartmann where they remained for their lifetimes. Gilbert lost his true partner Eurleen in 1997 after 51 years of marriage, and he was never the same. He is survived by their only son, Darrell and his wife, Lynda; one grandson, Christopher Daniel; one step-granddaughter, Christina Parker; one sister, Josie Lee Muske; one brother-in-law, Kermit Muske; one niece, Diane Johnson and her husband Gary, along with their sons Joseph and Michael, all from Houston. He was preceded in death by his other sister, Verlie Mae Neely.
Gil, as he was known, was a member of the Sons of Hermann Lodge in Rutersville where he recently received his 70 year pin. After he retired, he always loved to drive to his family homestead for the day and spend time at "the farm," which is still proudly family-owned and operated today by his son and niece.
The family wishes to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Spring Shadows Assisted Living Center for their extraordinary care for Gil. Thank you especially Simetah, Tamika, and Latifa for your dedication and love for Gil these past 14 years as he struggled with Alzheimer's Disease. He will be missed by all, but now he is reunited with his true love, Eurleen, in Heaven.
Visitation service will be Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 5-8 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 10, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel and burial will follow. In lieu of customary floral tributes, the family welcomes memorial contributions in Gil's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 2242 W. Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas 77030.
