Pronounced deceased at birth, the Lord intervened. With the provision of the Lord, and the steadfast love of friends and family, Dene, her older step sister Ethel, and her mother Claudia found their way through the depression Era. Answered prayers for hopes of brighter days came from Richard Barnett, Dene’s Step dad! He had two children of his own and Dene now had a step brother, Elton and another sister Wilma. She grew up in Houston Texas and graduated from Jeff Davis High School.
At the brink of World War 2 a handsome fella caught her eye! He picked her out before she ever met him! Once “again”, seeing her get off the bus from work he announced to his mother “That’s the girl I’m gonna marry” and that he did! Dene became Mrs. Travis Mauney. Travis had a delayed deployment due to special training which was the Lords hand in him being present for a special delivery! The birth of their daughter Evelyn Ann! Dene carried on in Houston while Travis served in the 13th armored division as a Black Cat. Surrounded by family, Dene made sure the generations of family, loved ones, neighbors, and dear friends where celebrated at special times especially on their Birthdays.
She poured out the Love of Jesus through 5 generations of Birthday cakes! Travis made it home from the war and they soon received another special delivery, their son TA Mauney Jr. They remained in Houston for several years. Throughout the years Dene served at church as a Sunday school teacher, helped with Vacation Bible School, and prepared church bulletins. She worked for Brookside Funeral Home in their office receiving payments and caring for the ledgers. She worked as a substitute teacher for Klein schools at Recreation Acres. Their children grew and the family moved to a Dairy farm in Cypress Texas where Evelyn and TA graduated from Cypress-Fairbanks High School. Precious friendships where made in Cypress that continue to this day.
Years later Dene and Travis moved to Shephard Texas, where Dene’s love of baking grew. She taught cake decorating classes as well lead the family on to catering weddings with beautiful wedding cakes she designed and decorated. Dene welcomed grandchildren into the world while continuing her love of baking and cake decorating. With growing grandchildren and the blessing of two more Dene and Travis found an endless supply of Love in Spring Texas. Where they both eventually worked for Klein ISD. Dene once again a substitute teacher then a receptionist at Klein High School. The continued stirring of Love from her kitchen filled many hearts across the growing Klein school district. A legacy of love that circled the Klein community, when they knew of a need they quietly filled it. Many times throughout the years precious ones would arrive home to find home cooked meals and fresh vegetable left at their doorstep.
The love stirred up in her Kitchen knew no boundaries. Dene later worked as the switchboard receptionist for Klein Central Office retiring from this post at the age of 90. Dene was recognized at The 75th Anniversary of KISD as one of the 75 distinguished alumni and staff from Klein High School. She was proud of her Texas heritage and a member of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas! Dene enjoyed corresponding with loved ones. Many have received her sweet notes on perfectly appointed cards that her family kept in continuous supply. She especially enjoyed keeping up with her Facebook Friends!!! Dene’s Golden years where lovingly cared for by her Daughter Evelyn who saw to every detail of her needs until her last breath at the age of 94 at her home in Spring Texas on July 17, 2018.
