Gustavo was born in Guacarí, Colombia on January 23, 1948. He married his wife Jenny in 1970 and moved with her to the United States in 1972. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston, he worked for several years as an instrument technician in Pasadena, Texas, and gained his United States citizenship in 1983.
His great passion, though, was his family and friends. He gave his time and love to many in the Colombian community in Houston and to his children and grandchildren. During retirement, he and Jenny spent much of their time back in Colombia, being with family and tending their own farm, which they lovingly named Las Violetas. They also enjoyed traveling and explored extensively throughout Latin America and Europe.
He is preceded in death by his father Camilo Torres Ruíz; mother Alicia Cruz Carvajal; his brother Camilo; and sister Martha Cecilia.
He is survived by his wife Jenny Maria; his daughter Claudia Lorena (Eduardo) and her children, Fabian Andres and Lauren Tatiana; his daughter Jeannie and her sons, Christian and Jonathan; and his son, Gustavo, Jr. (Melissa) and their children, Helena Marie and Alexander Gustavo. He is also survived by his brothers Luis Guillermo (Amparo) of Boca Raton, Florida and Rodrigo (Esther), of Cali, Colombia, and his sisters Rosalba, Aida Luz, Maria Nancy, and Nubia Elena, all of Cali, Colombia.
