Born on Feb. 8th 1926 in New Orleans. Louisiana, he was a happy and industrious child. During the Great Depression, he left school. He would give most all of the money he earned to his mother. This was the beginning of his long career as a self-employed man.
After his 2nd wife passed, Harold moved to Los Angeles, CA along with his four youngest children, he was only 31 years old. Continuing his career as a self-employed man he became a peddler in L.A., working long and arduous hours. He provided for his family in the only way he knew; hard work and perseverance. Harold sold produce from his truck going street-by-street, speaking and singing into his microphone letting his customers know that he was in the area.
Well-liked by everyone, Harold was trustworthy, honest, and a man of his word. He often said that he didn’t have much of anything but his word and it meant everything to him. No one ever saw or heard of him breaking his word. He was caring thoughtful, kind and sincere. He usually had a smile on his face. He never complained about his lot in life. He played the hand he was dealt and continued his walk through life. Well respected and conscientious at all times.
Harold continued to work until his retirement at 65 years old, he then took the job of goodwill ambassador wherever he lived. Harold truly was the epitome of a self-made man. Later in life Harold moved to Houston, TX and again brought joy and happiness to those who came to know him. Harold told stories and jokes with ease. A man of wisdom and understanding, he had a ready smile for everyone he met.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Thomas and Annette (Richard) McKenney, his nine siblings: brothers – Walter, Arthur, Earl, Percy, and Emperor, sisters – Irma, Irene, Inez, and Iola. One grandchild – Terrell. The mothers of his children, Lucille (Henderson) and Joyce (Leon) McKenney.
He is survived by his six children – Harold Jr., Jacquelyn, Michael, Louise (Nettie), Larry, and Lynette. Three loving and devoted daughters-in-law, Bernadine, Beverly, and Shay McKenney. Thirty grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren, and 37 great-great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many personal friends.
He will be sorely missed. His smile is now lighting up Heaven. Rest in Peace Harold. We love you and will always remember you for the man you were. God Bless you. If Harold is not going to Heaven, no one is going.
