Harriet Shelkofsky Harmon, 84 years old, entered the Lord's presence on February 14, 2015. Born July 15, 1930 to Harold and Mae Radford Shelkofsky in Montgomery, Alabama, Harriet spent her school years in Demopolis, Alabama. She eventually met the love of her life, J Raymond Harmon, while he was working for Brown & Root constructing the locks and dam on the Tombigbee River in Demopolis. They were married in Meridian, Mississippi on June 30, 1951 and traveled to several states during J's employment with Brown & Root, eventually settling in Houston in 1954.
They had two daughters, Karen and Debbie, and one son J Raymond Harmon, Jr. Harriet served as a school secretary in Spring Branch ISD, and later was a residential realtor. After the death of her husband, she went into the equestrian boarding business with her son, J.
"MeeMaw", as she was affectionately called by family, was known for her quick wit and southern accent, and was loved by everyone she knew. She spent years traveling around the world with her dear friends, including those from Memorial Church of Christ. She has spent the last few years loving on her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Harriet is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Betty Blankenship Glass. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Morris and husband, Steve, her daughter Debbie Moriarty and husband, Tim, all of Houston, her son, J Raymond Harmon, Jr. and wife, Lory, of New Braunfels, TX. , as well as her brother Jimmy Blankenship and wife, Betty, of Demopolis, Alabama, granddaughters Jennifer Moriarty Hyland, Kiki Moriarty Fountain, Courtney Moriarty Squillante, Kelli Morris Fargason, Lauren Harmon Kinsey, Michelle Moriarty Lonergan, J Raymond Harmon, III, and Lukas Harmon, and their spouses, thirteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Tuesday, February 17,2015 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston TX 77079
A celebration of Harriet's life will be held at Memorial Church of Christ (900 Echo Lane, Houston) on Wednesday, February 18, at 10:00am. A graveside service will follow immediately at Memorial Oaks Cemetery (13001 Katy Freeway, Houston).
The family is most thankful for many friends and their countless prayers and acts of kindness. The family also appreciates the professional and caring service from everyone at Buckner Hospice in Houston. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Wounded Warrior Project or LiveBeyond Houston fundraiser.
