A native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, a WWII veteran, a long-time employee of Humble Oil & Refining Co. (later Exxon) and a 56-year resident of Bellaire, Texas, Harry J. Smith entered into his final rest on Saturday, January 29, 2011. Harry was one of a unique breed of now-disappearing Americans: those who quietly and lovingly served their neighbors, their families, and their nation without question, complaint or concern about who received credit. The son of a small town and a wonderful family, Harry was surrounded with examples and role models of the life well led. And he became a shining example of such a well-led life. One could imagine no more steadfast and able a friend, no more helpful and supportive an uncle, no gentler and more devoted a husband, no friendlier and more constant a neighbor. He was a quiet hero to his devoted wife, Vivian, and to all who knew him. We will remember his humor and ready smile. And the palpable sense when you were in his company that you were in the presence of a profoundly decent man.
