Harry was the first son of Ann Deadrick Gill and Harry Wilton Sturges III. As a teenager, Harry was blessed to have his step-mother, MJ Sturges join their family.
Harry graduated from The Kinkaid School class of 1979. When he wasn’t operating his construction company, Harry preferred time spent at his ranch operating heavy machinery or tending to whatever project he decided to tackle that weekend. Ranching ran deep in his blood, as he, his brother Scott and their father Big H had property within 20 minutes of each other. Harry also frequented his Galveston beach house to get away from the hustle of the city where he would relax and formulate projects to tackle in the yard. His specialty? Plants and trees.
Those who know Harry had the pleasure of enjoying his impeccable grilling skills, his (in)tolerable jokes, his firm handshake and hugs, and most notably his distinguishable deep voice. Above everything else, Harry would make it known to anyone that would listen that his daughter Elizabeth (Sweet Angel) and his grandson Benton (The Little King) were his absolute pride and joy. If you couldn’t find Harry in the house sneaking Benton whipped cream or making Benton’s favorite chocolate milk, he would be in the backyard shooting Nerf guns or chasing Benton through the yard. Among many of the names he had been called in his lifetime, “Gampaw” always remained his favorite.
Harry is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Sturges and his grandson, Benton David Roebuck; his step-mother, Mary Jean Sturges, and his Uncle John Sturges. Harry also had numerous cousins and family members who will miss him.
Harry was preceded in death by his younger sister, Susanna Elizabeth Sturges, his maternal grandparents Ned and Julia Gill, his paternal grandparents Harry (Jr.) and Elizabeth Sturges, his Uncle Ned Gill, Jr and his parents, Ann Deadrick Gill and Harry Wilton Sturges III, and his younger brother R. Scott Sturges.
A memorial service is to be conducted at a future date.
