He was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas in January 1926 to his loving parents Susie Ramey Ross and George Washington Ross. Hartsel was one of eight children. Four brothers (Harold, Donald Lee, James, and Bill) and three sisters (Joy, Ruth, and Shirley).
The family moved from Fort Smith to the Houston area during his teens. At the age of 18, Hartsel began his service to our nation as a Merchant Marine. He served aboard ship in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific theaters of war.
After the war, in October 1946, he married his wife of 62 years, Juanita Margaret Malone of Van, Texas. Juanita gave birth to a son, Steven Ross in November 1953.
Hartsel was employed in the Houston area by Reed Roller Bit and 35 years at Schlumberger Well Services. In his off hours, in his early 20’s, he was a semi-pro catcher for several semi-pro baseball teams in the Houston area.
Hartsel and Juanita were inseparable as they served the Lord at Norhill Baptist Church, Glen Rose Baptist Church, Woodland Baptist Church, and Cornerstone Baptist Church. After Juanita went to be with the Lord, Hartsel moved to the San Antonio area to be closer to Steve and his wife, Debbie. While there he attended Bulverde Baptist Church.
As all who knew him are aware, Hartsel had an unfailing passion for serving the Lord Jesus Christ and living the Christlike life. He was known to have “led” many, many people to the Lord. His study of the bible was rigorous and his ability to recall 100’s of bible verses was remarkable. His teaching of the bible continued to his last days. Even into his 90’s he was teaching the Word of God at Independence Hill Retirement Community and Bulverde Assisted Living Facility. He loved children and babies especially loved him…babies were known to burst into smiles when being held by him.
He is survived by his youngest sister, Shirley Shaw of Topeka, Kansas; son Steve and wife Debbie of Spring Branch, Texas; granddaughters: Casey Holland and husband Andy of Conroe, Texas; Marisa White and husband Mark of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Sarah Besich and husband Thomas of Cibilo, Texas. Greatgrandchildren: Hallie and Ross Holland and Charlie and Jillian Besich.
