Hazel Mae Simmons was born January 12, 1947 in Crocket, Texas, to the late Wilbert Simmons Sr. and Mozell Taylor. She is the third child of seven siblings. Hazel grew up confessing her life to Christ at an early age. She later united with Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dolphine and remained a faithful member unto death.
Hazel was a homemaker and devoted herself to the rearing of her four children. No one was ever a stranger in her home. On any given day, especially Sunday, you could find her entertaining family and friends. She possessed a caring spirit and always shared a listening ear to anyone in need.
Hazel received her education through the Crocket Independent School District. The gift of nurturing that she possessed made her homemaking skills appear second nature. It was easy to see how it was an honor, privilege and joy to unselfishly put others needs before her own. She characterized the importance of being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. No matter what you needed from her; conversation, hugs, recipes or a meal, she was readily to be of service.
Whether you referred to her as Hazel, Mama or Nannie, with an endearing heart she affectionately received it. She exuded with compassion, patience and unconditional love. She also enjoyed cooking and dancing but most of all she enjoyed being with family. With spice, sassiness and a relatable persona, she was able to foster relationships tailored to each individual. Her infinite and nonjudgmental words of wisdom will be missed by many.
Hazel is preceded in death by her mother; Mozell Taylor, Father; Wilbert Simmons Sr., one grandson; Adrian Jerone Corley, two great-grandsons; Thomas Ryan Simmons “Lil Man” and Damarion Clark, two brothers; Albert D.
