Hector was born and raised in Brownsville, TX. He was one of thirteen children. He taught his nieces, nephews, and children many life lessons. Hector believed in hard work, education and integrity. He shared that determination was essential for success. However, chief among his lessons was that remembering your family and where you came from was most important.
He was a 44-year resident of Houston where he raised his family, and a fan of all things Houston, especially the Astros. He was an active participation in both community and church. He was a patriot who placed flags in his yard every 4th of July. Taking an instrumental role of food distribution for Casa Juan Diego, he fulfilled his ministry of helping those in need. He was the Lara Family Historian, the official keeper of all birthdays, anniversary, graduations and every special event in our family. He administered the Magdaleno & Josefa B. Lara Scholarship, for 25 years until 2020 when he passed the torch to his son, Hector Lara II. He was a three-time cancer fighter and despite the grueling treatment protocols he was ever the optimist and never complained. He brought joy to everyone blessed to know him and inspired to all who watched him live life fearlessly, and with love in his heart.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Esther Lara, and his children: Lisa Moran of Chandler, AZ; Nyna (and John) Weatherson of Truckee, CA; Hector (and Cristina) Lara of Houston, TX; and Adrian Lara of Austin, TX. Hector was blessed and survived by his eight grandchildren: Brandon Moran, Lauren Moran, Madeline Moran, Arielle Weatherson, Charlie Lara, Thomas Lara, Elisha Weatherson, and Eli Rose Lara.
He is also survived by his siblings: Lourdes Simmons of Brownsville, TX; Mary (and Frank) Fernandez of Haltom City, TX; Andy (and Rosie) Lara of Corpus Christi, TX; Esmeralda (and Lester) Goodell of Brownsville, TX; Rosie Burnias of Olmito, TX; Margie (and Karl) Oakley of Brownsville, TX; Elizabeth Gonzalez of Houston, TX; Agustin (and Josie) Lara of Austin, TX; Rick (and Belinda) Lara of Brownsville, TX; Dora (and Mike) Bernal of Brownsville, TX.
It was Hector’s wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Magdaleno & Josefa B. Lara Scholarship. Please send donations via venmo to @hector-lara-ii It is our intent as Hector’s immediate family and now executors of the Magdaleno & Josefa B. Lara Scholarship to honor one of Hectors greatest works: our family scholarship fund, created by our family and for our family.
