Obituary of Helen Rosette Guerra
Helen Rosette Guerra was a mom to everyone who knew her. She exuded warmth and humor, wit and wisdom, strength and joy. She passed away Jan. 20, 2023 in Houston, Texas. Though she had several health struggles across 20 years, she never let it define her. She fought. She laughed. She lived. Fiercely and fearlessly. Helen is survived by Joe Guerra, her husband of 50 years; sons Joey, Louie and Richard; grandchildren Celeste, Nolan, Ambrose, Emerson and Ulysses; daughters-in-law Cel and Kim; son-in-law Scott; and sister-in-law Maria. Also, brothers Rick, Michael, Charles and sister Cheryl and much more extended family. She was preceded in death by her father, Luis Ricarte; mother, Edna Ricarte; great-grandmother Jennie Dow; sister, Linda; and suegros Ama and Pepe. Helen was born in Houston, Texas and spent decades raising other people’s children. But she was less a babysitter and more a second mom, taking entire families on as her own. She loved going to concerts and musicals and restaurants. Her favorite movie was “Beaches.” She loved Josh Turner and BJ Thomas and Kenny Rogers. After being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2003, Martina McBride’s “This One’s for the Girls” became her anthem. But her favorite singer, from the first time she saw her sing on “American Idol,” was Kelly Clarkson. She loved her rendition of “Without You” and cried when she met Kelly at a book signing in 2016. She loved interacting with friends on Facebook. Singing herself to sleep with old hymns. Watching the Game Show Network. Watching Nolan and Ambrose play various sports. FaceTime with Celeste. Loteria and Uno with Emerson. Snuggling her newest grandbaby Ulysses. Per Helen’s longtime request, please wear bright, bold, beautiful colors to her visitation and services. No black. She frequently stressed that she did not want it to be a sad occasion.
