Helen Marie Hooper, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 88. She leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family.
Helen was born on August 27, 1937, in Hallettsville, Texas, to Edwin and Marie Klitsch. She spent her early years in Hallettsville where she worked in a local bakery. It was there that she developed the exceptional baking skills that would become one of the many ways she expressed her love. Family and friends were always treated to her homemade pies, cakes, cookies, and countless other delicious creations, each prepared with care and affection.
As a young woman, Helen's family moved to Houston, Texas. She later attended business school in San Antonio, where fate stepped in. One day, she caught sight of a handsome young man, Allen Hooper, driving down the street in his 1954 Corvette convertible. For both, it was love at first sight. They dated, became engaged, and then Allen was called to serve his country during the Korean War. After he returned home, they were married and began building a beautiful life together in San Antonio—a partnership that would span more than six decades.
Together, Helen and Allen raised four children: Duane, Dawn, Derek, and DeeDee. Helen worked as a bookkeeper throughout much of her career, but her greatest joy was being a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Her children fondly remember waking each morning to a hot homemade breakfast and ending every day gathered around the table for one of her wonderful home-cooked dinners. Her kitchen was the heart of the home, where love was served with every meal, and everyone was always welcome.
Helen's faith was the cornerstone of her life and one of the greatest gifts she passed on to her children. Sunday mornings were never optional—every week the family attended Mass together. Looking back, it is remarkable to think how she managed to prepare a full breakfast, get herself ready, and somehow have four young children dressed in their Sunday best and out the door on time for mass. She accomplished it all with quiet grace, patience, and determination, never wavering in her commitment to her faith or her family. The values she lived every day were the same values she instilled in those she loved.
In the 1970s, the Hooper family relocated to Houston, where they continued building a life centered on faith, family, and togetherness. Helen treasured every moment spent with her children, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Nothing brought her greater happiness than watching her family grow through the generations. She delighted in birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, and the simple everyday moments that became treasured memories. She also found great joy in gardening and loved spending time outdoors tending to her flowers and plants. One of her favorite daily rituals was greeting each morning with a cup of coffee as she walked through her garden, admiring her flowers and checking on each plant with the same loving care she gave to everything in her life. Whether planting something new or simply admiring what was in bloom, her garden reflected the same care, patience, and love that she poured into every aspect of her life.
Helen was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Allen Hooper, who passed away in 2025. After sharing 67 wonderful years together, it seemed they were never meant to be apart. Their love story was one of unwavering devotion, and it brings great comfort to know they have been reunited once again.
Helen is lovingly remembered by her children:
· Duane Hooper and his wife, Cindy; their daughter, Sarah; their one grandchild; and their beloved son, Jonathan, who preceded Helen in Heaven.
· Dawn Baker and her husband, Robert; their children, Jacob, Jessica, and Ryan; and their six grandchildren.
· Derek Hooper and his wife, Laura; their children, Nicholas, BreAnn, and Chloe; and their two grandchildren.
· DeeDee Dugat and her son, Kyle.
Helen also leaves behind her beloved brother, Frank Klitsch, and her sister, Shirley Weirich, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
Family was the center of Helen's life. Every member of her family held a special place in her heart, and she made each one feel deeply loved. Her greatest joy was simply being together, whether celebrating milestones, sharing holidays, or enjoying the everyday moments that became lifelong memories.
She also leaves behind many dear friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and friendship. The family is especially grateful for the unwavering love and companionship of her dear friends, Phil and Pat White, whose friendship brought Helen comfort, laughter, and joy throughout her later years.
Helen will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, selfless heart, remarkable work ethic, and unconditional love for her family. Her faith was the foundation of her life and was reflected in the quiet way she cared for others and faithfully put her family before herself. She taught those around her that love is best expressed through simple acts of service—a warm meal shared around the table, a welcoming home, a listening ear, and an open heart. Her legacy lives on through the traditions she created, the values she instilled, and the generations of family who were blessed to know her love.
While our hearts are broken by her passing, we find comfort in knowing she has been reunited with Allen, the love of her life. Their story did not end with goodbye—it simply continues together in eternity. Helen will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, where they will rest together once again after a lifetime of love and devotion.
Helen's faith, strength, kindness, and unconditional love will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who were blessed to know her. Though she is no longer with us, her example, her faith, and her love will remain a guiding light for generations to come.
