

Helen Montean McKamey Smith, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, 2016. Helen was born in Bald Knob, Arkansas on September 2, 1921 to Robert Leonard and Naomi McKamey. After graduation from Bald Knob High School, she went to St. Bernard Hospital Nursing School in Jonesboro, Arkansas. After graduating nursing school in 1943 she met the love of her life, Albert Doyne Smith and married him six weeks later on October 7, 1943.
After graduation, she went to work at St. Bernard Hospital in the Labor and Delivery area. When her husband was transferred to Nashville, she worked at Baptist Hospital. They then moved to Knoxville, and then on to New Orleans, LA and worked in the ER of Baptist Hospital. In 1961, they moved to Houston and started a 20 year career at MD Anderson Hosptial where she worked in the Ground Floor Therapy Department. She operated the hyperbaric radiation chamber. She retired from MD Anderson in 1981. After retirement, she and A.D. traveled the states and had a second home in Escondido, CA for a few years, where they would spend several months a year.
Helen loved to sew and crochet. She loved to craft and would use every scrap of material or ribbon to make the most beautiful things; ornaments, pillows, angels. She spent many hours in her yard growing beautiful flowers and nurturing all of her plants.
Helen was a Charter member of Westbury Baptist Church. She worked in the Children's Ministry area for many years. She volunteered her time taking care of all the flower beds around the church well into her 80's, making everything look beautiful.
Helen loved her family and spent many a Thanksgiving and Christmas making wonderful recipe favorites for those she loved like twice baked potatoes, sage dressing, deviled eggs, and of course a variety of cookies and friendship breads. Helen loved to tell stories of her early days and loved to sit and talk with her family.
She will be greatly missed by her family; Sons, Michael Smith and friend Betty Warren, Patrick Smith and Wife Jeannette; Grandchildren, David (Molly), Rick (Tara), Barbara, and Chelsea (Bradley); tweleve Great Grandchildren, Harrisen, Becca, Abbey, Adam, Bethany, Jackson, Brooke, Payton, Luella, Asa, Jace and Landry; Sister, Avilene Carril of Florida, and Sister in Law, Ruth Williams of Escondido, CA.
Friends are invited to visit with the family on Friday, May 13, 2016 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 2:00pm at Westbury Baptist Church 10425 Hillcroft. Houston, Texas 77096.
