Herb was born on August 27, 1933 in Birmingham, AL and passed away on December 9, 2013 in Houston. He is preceded in death by his parents A. C. and Dorothy English. He is survived by his wife Mary and his children, their spouses Dennis and Jennifer English, Kelly English, and Adam and Sharon English; grandchildren Tiffani Dorr Fagan, Blayne Dorr, Tatum English and Addison English.
Herb's parents settled in the Garden Oaks area of Houston in the 40's where he attended Hamilton Junior High School and later John H. Reagan High School. It was a great joy to him to maintain contact with some of his friends from his Reagan days. We attended many of the Reagan reunions where he enjoyed the company of friends from the Class of '52.
He and several of his friends joined in service to their country during the Korean Conflict. While he didn't discuss his days in Korea, he did talk about the cold weather and how proud he was to serve. After the Army, he built his career around the insurance business. He married and raised his children with great pride and joy.
In 1981 Herb met Mary Meyer at a Christmas party given by a mutual business associate. Their relationship continued until they finally married in May 1994.
After suffering several mini-strokes, Herb had a major stroke in 1998. He and Mary joined the Memorial Stroke Support Group. The group offered support, friendship, and education relating to stroke and associated issues such as seizures, Parkinson's disease and dementia. Even though the support group disbanded a few years ago, their friendship with the members has continued to this day.
Herb was introduced to The Gathering in 2010. He attended their meetings seven times a month and enjoyed them so much, especially Bingo after lunch. We extend a very special thank you to the dedicated and loving volunteers at The Gathering. You brought such joy to his life.
