Herbert Mc Daniel Jr. of Houston, Texas passed away on January 18, 2022. He was born to Herbert Sr. and Lilian Thomas Mc Daniel on December 25, 1930. He grew up in the Fourth Ward community as the oldest of three brothers. He attended Gregory Elementary and was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. As a student he enjoyed eating the school cafeteria lunches everyday and hence, affectionately became known as, "Plate Lunch". His love of food and cooking would follow him throughout his whole life. Many BBQ and church fundraisers had the “Mr. Mac” touch.
Herbert furthered his education at Texas Southern University receiving his Bachelors of Arts degree in1953. He went on to receive his Masters of Education degree from the University of Houston in 1968. He was a proud member of the Alpha phi Alpha fraternity.
He was baptized at an early age at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Fourth Ward and later as an adult joined Antioch Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. F. N. Williams. He later became one of the founding members of Incarnation Episcopal Church in the Acres Homes community. He held many offices in church leadership. He was instrumental in the organization of the Men’s Group at Incarnation and worked in the church food pantry. His most joyous presence was felt in the choir where he lent his wonderful tenor voice to many services and occasions. He was instrumental in merging Incarnation and St Michaels into what is now Hope Episcopal Church.
Mr. Mc Daniel began his work career at MD Anderson Hospital in 1953. In 1958, “Mr. Mac”, as he was known to many, began his teaching career in the Houston Independent School District at Fairchild Elementary. He would later move to Grimes Elementary and then on to Osborne Elementary. He spent the majority of his teaching career at Osborne where he touched the lives of many students in the Acres Homes community, and retired in1985.
While teaching at Fairchild he met and married Abbie Odessa Randle and became father to 4 children. He was a jazz enthusiast, and was well known for his delicious barbecue. He loved reading the newspaper, working crossword puzzles and Scrabble. His insights and opinions on daily life were often sought after.
In addition to his loving wife Abbie, Herbert is survived by his children Johnnie Lois, Emil Jerry,Herbert III, and Eric Demetrius; his grandchildren Sais Yero, Abbie Yero-Pryor (Aron) and Emil Jerry “EJ” Clemons II; his great grandchildren Nia Yero, Solomon Yero, Aron Pryor and Alexandria Pryor; his brothers Freddie L. Mc Daniel, Charles A. Mc Daniel and a host of other relatives and friends.
A visitation for Herbert will be held Friday, January 28, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Paradise Funeral Home, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088. A visitation will occur Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Hope Episcopal, 1613 W. 43rd Street, Houston, TX 77018. A funeral service will occur Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Hope Episcopal, 1613 W. 43rd Street, Houston, TX 77018. A committal service will occur Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Cemetery Beautiful, 8401 Wheatley, Houston, TX 77088.
