Herminia Vela Vega

Herminia Vela Vega passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of deep faith, service, and love for her family and community. She was born in General Treviño, Nuevo León, Mexico, to her parents Santos Perez and Luis Vela. From an early age, Herminia carried a strong devotion to her Catholic faith that would guide her throughout life.

Herminia was married in General Treviño, Nuevo León, to her beloved husband, Alvaro Manuel Vega, with whom she built a loving family and shared 56 years of companionship. Together they raised their children with strong values of faith, family, and a strong work ethic.

Herminia was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and was especially active at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Houston. She served as a Eucharistic Minister, faithfully bringing Holy Communion to the sick and elderly in nursing homes and private residences throughout the community. She was also an active member of the Guadalupanos group since its early days at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.

Herminia’s dedication to serving others extended far beyond weekly Mass. For many years she distributed small devotional booklets titled “Five Minutes of Prayer in the Home” to anyone she encountered—neighbors, the elderly, those who were sick, even people she met at doctor’s offices—believing that a moment of prayer could bring comfort and hope to many. She also lovingly promoted the celebration of Las Posadas within her neighborhood, helping families prepare spiritually for the Christmas season.

Throughout her life, Herminia remained active in her broader community as well. She served as President of the Mexican Patriotic Club in South Chicago and was involved with Right to Life groups in Chicago. Wherever she lived—from Chicago to Houston—she carried the same mission: to serve others unconditionally and with unwavering faith.

Herminia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alvaro Manuel Vega; her youngest son, Jesús Alfonso Vega; and her granddaughter, Sara Vega.

She is survived by her children: Luis (Chicago, Illinois), Alvaro (Munster, Indiana), Alberto (Houston, Texas), Alejandro (Houston, Texas), and her daughter Maria Guadalupe Castillo (Houston, Texas). She also leaves behind a large and loving family including 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward her legacy of faith and devotion.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Iris Rios for the care and compassion shown to Herminia during her final days.

Herminia will be remembered for her resilient spirit, her unwavering devotion to God, and her tireless service to those in need. Her life was a testament to faith in action, and her memory will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.

Herminia Vela Vega falleció en paz, dejando un legado de profunda fe, servicio y amor por su familia y su comunidad. Nació en General Treviño, Nuevo León, México, hija de sus padres Santos Pérez y Luis Vela. Desde temprana edad, Herminia mostró una gran devoción a su fe católica, la cual la guiaría a lo largo de toda su vida.

Herminia se casó en General Treviño, Nuevo León, con su amado esposo, Álvaro Manuel Vega, con quien formó una familia llena de amor y compartió 56 años de matrimonio. Juntos criaron a sus hijos con fuertes valores de fe, familia y una sólida ética de trabajo.

Herminia fue una miembra devota de la Iglesia Católica y participó activamente en Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo en Houston. Sirvió como Ministra de la Eucaristía, llevando fielmente la Sagrada Comunión a los enfermos y a los ancianos en hogares de cuidado y residencias privadas en toda la comunidad. También fue miembro activo del grupo de Guadalupanos desde sus primeros años en la Iglesia Católica Mt. Carmel.

La dedicación de Herminia al servicio de los demás se extendía mucho más allá de la Misa semanal. Durante muchos años distribuyó pequeños folletos devocionales titulados “Cinco Minutos de Oración en el Hogar” a todas las personas que encontraba—vecinos, ancianos, enfermos e incluso personas que conocía en consultorios médicos—pues creía que un momento de oración podía brindar consuelo y esperanza a muchos. También promovió con cariño la celebración de Las Posadas en su vecindario, ayudando a las familias a prepararse espiritualmente para la temporada navideña.

A lo largo de su vida, Herminia también permaneció activa en su comunidad en general. Fue Presidenta del Club Patriótico Mexicano en el sur de Chicago y participó en grupos de Derecho a la Vida en Chicago. Dondequiera que viviera—desde Treviño a Chicago hasta Houston—llevó la misma misión: servir a los demás incondicionalmente y con una fe inquebrantable.

Herminia fue precedida en la muerte por su amado esposo, Álvaro Manuel Vega; su hijo menor, Jesús Alfonso Vega; y su nieta, Sara Vega.

Le sobreviven sus hijos: Luis (Chicago, Illinois), Álvaro (Munster, Indiana), Alberto (Houston, Texas), Alejandro (Houston, Texas) y su hija María Guadalupe Castillo (Houston, Texas). También deja una familia grande y amorosa que incluye 16 nietos, 26 bisnietos y 3 tataranietos, quienes continuarán su legado de fe y devoción.

La familia desea expresar su más sincero agradecimiento a Iris Ríos por el cuidado y la compasión brindados a Herminia durante sus últimos días.

Herminia será recordada por su espíritu resiliente, su inquebrantable devoción a Dios y su incansable servicio a quienes más lo necesitaban. Su vida fue un testimonio de fe puesta en acción, y su memoria continuará inspirando a todos los que la conocieron y la amaron.
