Our mom/grandma had to leave her birthplace province in her early teens to avoid being a victim of rape, kidnapping from the Japanese occupying army. She had to learn to live on her own and growing up without any family support for many years in Vietnam. She was able to learn sewing, and embroidery, then opened her own tailor shop. She then opened her fabric retail business and later became a successful businesswoman with properties in Vung Tau and Sai Gon.
Then came the event of summer 1975, she had to give up all her properties and wealth to escape the Viet Cong regime in exchange for freedom in America with her children empty handed.
Arriving in America, with hard work and determination, our mom/grandma built her bar/restaurant business from scratch. Working every day of her life to have enough money to nurture us to become a productive member of the community. Never once did she want to take time for vacation or time off by choice. She always spends her hard-earned money toward her family. Even when she was well-off, she would still live in the same house that we first moved into in 1976. She had fate and trust in people, helped them in times when we didn’t have much for ourselves. She lived frugally throughout her life but found happiness and satisfaction in the success of her children/grandchildren.
She finally retired at the age of 77. Since then, she had survived a minor stroke and colon cancer. Our mom/grandma was a survivor with strong mind and independent. At the age of 96, her cancer resurfaced and caught up to her. She had to leave us here in this world, but she will never leave us in our hearts and minds.
And so, we have to say goodbye to our beloved mom/grandma for now. We will see each other again soon. We want to thank you mom/grandma so very much for all your love and guidance and support all these years. We love you; we miss you, but you can go to heaven now and know that we are alright because of you. As my daughter, her granddaughter often said to her, You are number ONE to us, Always.
Love you mom/banoi.
