Hollie Ben Young was born on May 22, 1928 in Rosedale, Mississippi. Hollie was a loving mother of three children and a devoted wife of Kokyou (Mike) Young for 66 years before he passed in 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, Susie Chung Wong and Ben Kee Wong.

She is survived by her daughters, Jeanette Y. Bocell and her husband, Dr. James (Jim) Bocell, Debbi Mulcahy and her husband Mark. Hollie is survived by a sister, Susie Gee, and her brother-in-law Hank Lee, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Hollie and Mike were grocery store owners since 1953. They moved near the Houston ship channel where they had a thriving grocery store for 37 years. They retired from the store in 1995 to take care of their only grandchild at the time. Hollie was also a homemaker along with her many other talents in life. She was a baker, seamstress, and she knew how to crochet and knit. Her baking skills were more to satisfy her own sweet tooth.

Hollie was not an outdoorswoman like her husband Mike, but eventually she and Mike would become the “power couple” of Galveston pier, where they were members for many years.

Mom is loved and will be missed by many. God bless her soul.

Mom, Jim and I would like to give special thanks to our friend and Mom’s caregiver, Alba Benitez. Mom was happiest when Alba was around. In addition, we would like to thank Dr. Kew for taking care of Mom’s mental health and Dr. Muntz who took care of her physical health.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.brooksidefuneralhomelauder.com for the Young family.

We were not fortunate enough to know Holly for our whole lifetime; the time we were fortunate enough to know her, our lives were made better by her infectious smile and wonderful demeanor. These memories we can cherish for the rest of our lives.

My fondest memories of Miss Hollie are those sweet smiles and soft giggles every time we spoke. One time I asked her, "What are you up to these days, Miss Hollie?" She replied, "Oh Daddy and I walk every day in the 'malt'." Whaaat? "The MALL".....so adorably cute and charming. I never heard a complaint from her lips. I never saw a frown. She was soft and unassuming....a true lady. She was a steadfast companion to Mr. Mike, and a loving mother to her children. I hold her memory in the highest regard and consider any time spent in her presence as a blessing. Rest with your best beau, Miss Hollie.

I remember Holly as always smiling and being so sweet! Billy, her younger brother and my husband, , always said she was the kindest and most loving! I remember Holly bringing tons of food to her patents and being very generous and thoughtful! She knew what foods were their favorite and generously brought them for Grandpa and Grandma Wong. We will miss her loving smile and kindness!
God bless Holly!

Love,
Martha Wong.
