Hortencia Diaz Gomez

Hortencia (Tencha) Gomez was born March 6, 1936 to Brigido Diaz and San Juana Castro in Sinton, Texas. She passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 in Houston, Texas.

In 1960 she married Porfirio (Pilo) Gomez. Hortencia & Pilo went on to have 4 children; Edward, Georgia, Gloria and Isabel.Hortencia is proceeded in death by her brothers, Domacio, Santos, Paul, Victor and sisters, Althea and Ygnacia. Tencha is survived by her children; Edward, Georgia and spouse Jesse, Gloria, Isabel and spouse Paige, grandchildren; Jennifer and spouse Mike, Belinda and spouse Andrew, Rick and spouse Abby, Angelica and spouse Chris, Edward Jr, Tiffany, and Emily, and great-grandchildren; Ashley and spouse John, Julian, Brianna, Nic, Liliana, Giovanni, Aiden, Roland, Dalilah, Aaliyah, Alyssa and Rey.

Hortencia would say her greatest accomplishment is her family. Family time was precious and valued by her, whether it was a wonderful Wednesday gathering or one of many birthday celebrations. Spending time with her family always brought a smile to her face. Hortencia spent her working life as a jeweler. She practiced her Catholic faith as a member of Saint Thomas More Catholic Church. Outside of Sunday mass, she would say her prayers and read the Bible in the solitude of her bedroom twice a day.

In her younger days she enjoyed going out with her friends and dancing. She also loved to play bingo, watch the Houston Astros and watch an “Old Western” show. Spending the evening with a glass of Hennessy and gambling around the dining room table were some of her greatest moments, especially if she was winning. She loved her pets from Max all the way to Bella and her bird, Conchita.

Affectionately referred to as Mama Gomez or Grandma, she was loved by her family and friends. It’s hard to say goodbye to somebody who has made such an impact in our life, but it’s comforting knowing that even though she’s not with us physically anymore, we will carry her with us wherever we go. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. She is our QUEEN.

Visitation for Hortencia will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Advantage Funeral Home, 7010 Chetwood Dr. Houston, Texas with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 pm. A Chapel Service will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 10:00 am at the Advantage Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Houston, Tx 77023.
