

Howard was born on February 19, 1922 in Montgomery County, PA, to Eva Lulu and Samuel Shannon Pauling of Muncy, Pennsylvania, and grew up on a farm. He graduated from Montgomery High School in 1940 in Montgomery, PA. He joined the US Army/Air Force and was a B-17 pilot in WWII. His plane, “ Big Stoop “, was shot down April 10, 1944, and he and 5 other crew members escaped to Sweden. Shortly after, he returned to the U.S. and married his sweetheart, Jean Fairchild, on May 27, 1944, in Watsontown, PA. He retired from the U.S. Army after 30 years active duty from 1943 to 1973. During his service, he was stationed in many cities in the U.S., and in Japan and Germany. After retiring, he worked in real estate 23 years. His hobbies included travel, woodworking, playing games, gardening and cooking. The children of the neighborhood brought him much joy in his final years.
Howard is remembered as a man of many talents, and a patient, kind and loving father to his children, teaching them life skills every step of the way. His sense of humor prevailed every day of his life, even until the end. His sweet smile lit up his face and inspired smiles all around. His love of food and especially desserts was a source of much joy in his life. His generous nature and love of family, was ever present.
Howard was diagnosed with variants of Lewy Body Dementia, Frontal Temporal Degeneration, and Vascular dementias, and lived with their effects since 2005. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to his dedicated caregivers, Arturo, Linda and Karen who have lovingly cared for him for 4 years.
Howard is survived by his spouse of 72 years, Jean Fairchild Burrows Pauling, of Houston, Texas; his daughter, Vicki J. Hyde, of Houston, Texas, his granddaughter, Chelette (Cheli) Leigh Cellmer and her, husband, Louis (Trey) M. Cellmer III and his great-grandaughter, Cindy Jean Cellmer, all of Houston, Texas, and his sister, Lois Evelyn Sterry, and her husband, Richard John Sterry of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his son’s widow, Debora Long, of Pollack, Louisiana.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Terry Shannon Pauling, of Pollack, Louisiana in 2008, his brother, Richard Pauling, and his sisters, Roxanne Jarrett, Doris Fairchild, all of Pennsylvania.
Howard’s Celebration of Life/Memorial Service will be held Monday, June 27, 2016 at 11:00 am at Brookside Funeral home, Cypress Creek, Houston, Texas with an inurnment service at the Houston National Cemetery at 12:30pm with full military honors.
