The world became a brighter place on October 5, 1949, when Ian Elton Spooner was born in St. James, Trinidad. The youngest son of the late Eustace Spooner and Audrey Phillip Spooner, Ian brought a spark into the world that would never quite dim.
He received his early education in Trinidad and, as a teenager, stepped forward to serve his country by joining the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard. Serving under Commander Blooms, Ian’s personal connection to the commander earned him a nickname that would follow him for the rest of his life: “Blooms.”
After his time in the Coast Guard, Ian poured his energy into his greatest passion: soccer. He played for an elite club in Trinidad, forging bonds with teammates that crossed oceans and defied time. When Ian migrated to New York in the early 1970s, his talent on the pitch didn’t go unnoticed. He quickly found a footing in the Brooklyn soccer community, eventually earning the opportunity to play for two semi-pro teams, the Vandikes and the Juniors.
But soccer wasn’t the only thing Ian discovered in Brooklyn. It was there that he met, courted, and married the absolute love of his life and wife of 52 years, Cheryl. Two years into their marriage, they welcomed the first of their two children. Filled with love, drive, and a shared hope for the future, the young family packed up and headed to Texas to write their next chapter.
In Houston, Ian found more than just a job; he found a second home and a second family at Peltier Brothers Construction. When they first gave a young Ian a chance, they couldn’t have known that 47 years later—interrupted only by a brief, hilarious three-week attempt at retirement—he would still be happily clocking in, eager to get behind the wheel of the Boom truck.
Ian wore many titles proudly: son, brother, husband, uncle, father, and grandfather. But to anyone who crossed his path, he was simply a friend. He will be remembered by most as one of the easiest people to get along with—a man defined by his unwavering honesty, fierce loyalty, and a truly giving heart. And, of course, no one will ever forget his trademark colorful language, which he used with unmatched flair.
Though he was completely devoted to his family and never missed a chance to support his grandchildren in their many activities, Ian’s heart always kept a line open to his homeland. He regularly journeyed back to his beloved Trinidad, where he found a unique, soul-deep level of joy. Whether he was liming with his brother and lifelong friends at Rick Rock, Universal, or Smokey & Bunty’s, or swimming in the warm waters of Trinidad’s beautiful beaches, he was content. He was home.
On June 6, 2026, we lost Ian, but we did not lose what he gave us. His love remains. His energy remains. His spirit remains in the hearts of those who knew him best. Though we mourn his passing, we also give thanks—for his life, for his friendship, and for the countless memories he leaves behind. May we honor him by carrying forward the kindness he showed, the strength he embodied, and the love he gave so freely.
Rest in peace, Ian, Spooner, Blooms. You will always be remembered, always be loved, and never be forgotten.
