It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Irene Craft Howard, who peacefully departed from this world on February 25,2025, at the age of 97. Irene was a cherished mother, grandmother, auntie and friend, whose kindness and love left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Irene was born on September 2, 1927, in El Campo, Texas, to loving parents Eddie and Alice Rutherford Craft.
Growing up in a close-knit family, she developed a strong sense of working, community and compassion that would guide her throughout her life.
She professed her love and belief in Christ by baptism at an early age. She has been a member of New
Jerusalem Baptist Church for over 60 years and was a hardworking and faithful servant until her health
prohibited her physically. She has spent her last years with her son Clyde and wife, Jenny. At the time of her passing she was a resident of Avalon Memory Care in Keller, Texas.
Irene pursued her education with determination and graduated from El Campo Public Schools. She was a
lifelong learner. She acquired several business and health related certifications. She volunteered as a camp counselor for the Girl Scouts of America, she was a volunteer instructor for Red Cross of America and an after-school tutor for the Boys and Girls Club in Acres Home. Her career was dedicated to helping others, and she spent several years working for the Milton and Dolores Clark family and has remained close to the family members for over 65 years. Her career transitioned to Houston Public Schools - she worked and retired as a School Secretary for Reynolds Elementary School for over 30 years where she touched countless children and teacher’s lives with her empathy and dedication.
Irene married Major Washington, Jr., Together, they built a loving home and were blessed with one son:
William Clyde. Irene was a devoted mother who instilled in her son, Clyde and grandson, Chris the values of kindness, perseverance, and love. Her family was her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment spent with her family, whom she adored.
A Legacy of Love
Later in Life Irene married Anthony Howard who preceded her in death. Irene’s impact extended beyond her immediate family. She was an active member of her church and community, always willing to lend a helping hand or provide a comforting word. Her warm spirit made her a beloved figure in her neighborhood, where she was affectionately known as “Miss Irene.”
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, John L, CB, Eddie, Ennis, and Chester; and one sister, Erma
Irene’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She is survived by her son, Clyde, daughter-in -law, Jenny and grandson, Chris, sister, Estella Ward, and a host of nieces,
nephews, and friends.
Celebration of Life
Irene Washington Howard will be remembered for her unwavering love, her boundless generosity, and her
enduring faith. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.

A visitation for Irene will be held Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at Paradise Funeral Home, Inc, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088. The funeral service will immediately follow from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM. Followed by the committal from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Paradise Funeral Home & Cemetery North, 10401 W Montgomery Rd, Houston, TX 77088. A reception will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088.
