Jack Raymond Wells III “Trey” passed away peacefully at home Monday, October 5, 2026 after a five month courageous battle with colon cancer at the age of 31 years. Trey was a light to all who knew him and a joy to his family.
Trey was born to Jack Jr. and Lucinda (Meeks) Wells in Katy, Texas on March 29, 1995. He joined the family with older sister, Meghan. She was his first and best friend.
He grew up in Katy and had cherished memories of his childhood. After graduating from Cinco Ranch High School in 2013, Trey went on to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, completing his undergrad in Energy Commerce in 2017. In 2022, he earned an MBA from the Texas Christian University Neeley School of Business.
He began his professional career at Plains All American Pipeline, as a Financial Operations Analyst, working in Midland and Houston. Later he worked for the Hess Corporation in New York City as a Senior Specialist in Strategy and Financial Planning. Most recently, Trey worked for Murphy Oil in Houston. His work in oil and gas consisted of budgetary, finance and corporate strategy. He loved the work and made many friends during his career, friends whom he loved dearly.
The love of travel was instilled in Trey from an early age. His parents took him numerous places in the United States, creating a wanderlust that was forever looming at the surface. He wanted to go everywhere, see everything, have all the experiences and eat all the food! He truly lived life to the fullest, always up for the next adventure. Just this year, before he got ill, he made trips to Denver, New York, Seattle, Mexico City and went on a Caribbean cruise. Besides all the usual tourist destinations, he also travelled to Budapest with his dad, Croatia, Morocco and Israel with his mom.
Cheering for his hometown Astros, Texans and Rockets were a favorite pastime, especially growing up in Houston. But he lived for Texas Tech sports. He was a Red Raider through and through, loving the football and basketball games.
Trey was saved and baptized at the age of eight in the First Baptist Church of Katy. He was baptized in the Jordan River during his trip to The Holy Land in 2019. Trey took his faith very seriously. If you knew him, you know he spoke freely of his love for Jesus. He even found a church in New York, taking a long bus ride just to get there. He was in scripture daily and had many playlists of praise and worship music.
Survivors include his parents, sister and niece Tessa; aunts Kathleen Deel (Dickie), Katrina Wetherby (Don), and Scarlett Lee (James); great aunt Erna Jean Middleton (Roger); cousins Daryl Deel, Kendra Gonzalez (Saul), Kent Sherrer, Kate Finney (Nick), and Remington Lee; many more cousins and a lot of special friends.
Trey’s friends rallied around him during the last five months. They prayed for him, cried with him, made him laugh, visited him in the hospital and at home. They brought him food, snacks, books and showered love on him during this difficult time. His friends are numerous and treasured. They got him through many dark days from procedures, surgeries and treatments, and he was beyond grateful.
Memorial service is at 2:00pm, Saturday, October 17, 2026 at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Texas Liberty Mausoleum Chapel, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston. Memorial visitation is from 1:00-2:00. Reception following service at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
