Jaime Subirats, age, 70, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015 in Houston, Texas. He was born on June 17, 1945 and raised in Mexico City. He spent most of his younger years playing tennis at the Club Espana in Mexico City, and studying primary and high school at the Colegio Madrid in Mexico City. Because of his natural talent, dedication, and long hours on the court, Jaime received a full tennis scholarship to play for Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.
Jaime graduated from Lamar University as a Chemical Engineer. He was a strong student, regardless of the fact that he came to the United States speaking very little English. With a full scholarship to play with the Lamar tennis team, Jaime was told to have had a very strong accent, making it hard for anyone to understand him! Even though, he received higher grades in his first college English class than many of the American students who studied with him. In the years following, Jaime was a student of life, continually learning about anything and everything that interested him. He received various licenses for insurance, real estate broker, financial planning, travel agent, etc.
From being a successful hall of fame college athlete and NCAA champion, to Davis Cup player for Mexico, to playing in Wimbledon and the US Open, Jaime had an exciting "career" even before he left college to start his professional life. After graduating as a Chemical Engineer from Lamar University, Jaime was hired by Philips Petroleum, where his hard work and integrity helped him to be promoted to Director of Latin American operations, and was transferred with his family to Houston, Texas to start a new life. After the oil industry collapsed in the mid 1980's, rather than moving back to Mexico, Jaime decided to take the hard road and start over in the United States. Jaime dedicated himself to becoming an expert in a little bit of everything. When applying for conventional positions, Jaime was told he was overqualified, which led him to explore alternative options. From travel agent, to vacuum salesman, to mortgage broker and insurance salesman, Jaime's intelligence and hard work, allowed him to give his family a high quality of life. Jaime extended a helping hand and generosity to his immediate and extended family. At times he was generous to a fault, but always found a way to make things work.
Jaime and his family have been members of original Wimbledon Racquet club, now known as Giammalva Tennis & Fitenss Club, since 1979. Also, he was a member of Tomball Country Club, North Gate Country Club, and finally Wind Rose Golf Club. He was a founding member of the Evangelical Christian church "Los Llamados a Mi Nombre".
Jaime was a world-class tennis player, intermediate golfer, and a self proclaimed expert in any sport. He love watching all sports on TV, regardless of team or sport. Jaime loved a good joke (or a bad one!) and was known to repeat them to anyone who would listen. He'd be the first to laugh at them, his favorite to tell being the one about "Juan Caca" or the tennis courts in heaven. He was also passionate about traveling and was always on the search for irresistible deals for his next big trip. His favorite form of traveling was by cruise ship, where after countless cruises, he gained VIP status on several lines. Even though Jaime had traveled the world around with tennis, he never tired of it. Though he didn't have the luxury of endless budget, he and his wife would work and the find the way to make not just one "once in a lifetime trip", but several! His final adventure cruising the world was a 30 day transatlantic trip to Europe and the Nordic countries. Jaime also had a gift for finding quality, low cost wines at HEB and Specs (where he was a VIP in their rewards program!). He lived to find the next great international wine at under $5.00. He loved combining his wine with his favorite foods: gourmet cheese and prosciutto, and salmon prepared by his loving wife.
Jaime's family gives special thanks to all of his family, friends, and acquaintances that have sent their condolences and words of strength. Also, to the Giammalva Racquet & Fitness Club for providing the venue to celebrate the his life, and to Los Cucos Mexican Restaurant for providing the catering.
Jaime was preceded in death by his parents, Nestor and Alicia Simon Subirats. He is survived by his loving wife, Fela Subirats; his sons, Oscar and Jaime Subirats; his grandchildren, Gabriel and Annabelle Subirats; his siblings, Elena, Nestor, Alicia, and Armando Subirats; and numerous other loving relatives and friends.
Rather than flowers, please consider the needs of the surviving spouse. Please make all monetary donations to Fela Subirats at any Chase Bank branch. For inquiries, contact Jaime, Jr. at [email protected]
