He was born in Dallas, Texas, on June 25, 1940.
He married his beloved wife of 26 years, Linda Ward Acker, late in life.
After learning electronic and radar engineering in the Marines, Jim had an adventurous career as a geophysicist. He traveled the world with this profession for over 40 years, collecting unique knick knacks from remote parts of nearly every continent before devoting himself to buying and selling antiques, a passion he shared with his wife Linda and that connected him with many who shared his love of history and different cultures.
He was a proud Marine and member of the Cypress Marine Corps League and American Legion Post 560, and he made a significant impact through his volunteer work with Houston area veterans’ groups.
He was also a devoted member of Oak Forest Baptist Church, a community that meant much to him in his final years, as he deeply contemplated his faith and came full circle in his beliefs.
He is survived by his wife Linda, as well as his daughters, Vanessa Acker and Susanna Acker, and his grandchildren, Marissa Cantu, Micah McDuff, Joaquin Abreu Acker, and Benjamin Abreu Acker.
The second of five children, he is also survived by his older brother, Robert Acker, and younger sister, Katherine Riddle. He will join his sister, Susan Whirlow, and brother, John Acker, who went before him.
His canine companions were dear to him. Aggie and Oscar have stayed behind with Linda, but Jinx, Harley, and Charlie are on a long walk with him now.
He will be remembered not only for his mischievous sense of humor, but for his generosity and love of a good conversation. A Marine to the core, he never complained and was independent until the end. When his time came, he carried himself with tranquility, strength, and good humor. He will be missed dearly.
Funeral arrangements will be held at American Heritage Funeral Home in Houston, Texas, on January 25 at 12pm. Viewings will take place January 24 from 4-8pm and January 25 from 10-12pm.
